Opportunities & Announcements

Facilitating collaboration through the COVID Information Commons
The COVID Information Commons (CIC) is an open website to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration across various COVID research efforts, initiated by the NSF Convergence Accelerator. The initial focus of the CIC website is on NSF-funded COVID Rapid Response Research (RAPID) projects. The CIC serves as a resource for researchers, students and decision-makers from academia, government, not-for-profits and industry to identify collaboration opportunities, to leverage each other's research findings, and to accelerate the most promising research to mitigate the broad societal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a collaborative effort led by the Northeast Hub in close collaboration with the Midwest, South and West Hubs. Learn more on their website.

NSF Civic Innovation Challenge | Stage 1 Proposals Due August 3
In collaboration with the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Metrolab, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has launched the Civic Innovation Challenge. This $11 million research and action competition aims to fund ready-to-implement, research-based pilot projects that have the potential for scalable, sustainable, and transferable impact on community-identified priorities. The Civic Innovation Challenge offers two tracks: Communities & Mobility and Resilience to Natural Disasters. Learn more on their website.

FORCE11 Scholarly Communications Institute | August 3-13 | Virtual
Registration is open for FSCI 2020. The focus this year is on the theme of FAIR Data principles. The theme includes an array of courses and plenaries in innovative publishing practices, policy implementation, and other aspects of scholarly communication -- all delivered virtually. Learn more on their website.

Southern Data Science Conference | August 12-14 | Atlanta, GA
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, SDSC20 has been postponed to Aug. 12-14 at the same venue and with the same programming. SDSC is a special data science R&D conference that brings experts and researchers from the top data science companies and institutes to present their work and share their best practices in data science. The conference's attendees represent industry, academia, and government institutions across the US. Learn more on their website.

Conference on Truth and Trust Online | October 16-17 | Virtual |
Proposals due August 15

USAID's Intelligent Forecasting Challenge | Proposals Due September 8
The USAID seeks to identify and test more accurate methods of predicting future contraceptive use at health service delivery sites. Their team will award $25K in prizes to innovators who develop an intelligent forecasting model—using the data it provides and methods such as artificial intelligence (AI)—to predict the consumption of contraceptives over three months. The team will also award a Field Implementation Grant of approximately $100K to $200K to customize and test a high-performing intelligent forecasting model in Côte d’Ivoire. Learn more on their website.

2020 ADSA Annual Meeting | October 14-16 | Virtual
The Virtual 2020 ADSA Annual Meeting will bring together data science methodologists and domain researchers from all disciplines and career stages to share breakthroughs and new approaches in data science research and education, with a strong emphasis on responsible data science. Their team is encouraging new, untested ideas to promote brainstorming for innovation and promote collaborative feedback and engaging discussions. Learn more on their website.

South Hub Project Highlight

Accelerating the pace of big data through NSF Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) initiative
he National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) is a $30 million initiative aimed at realizing the potential of Big Data. Projects funded by this initiative are doing everything from improving our chances of detecting dark matter to resolving the tree of life. Coordinating the building of a national data infrastructure, sharing best practices and identifying gaps that need to be addressed by the community is no small effort. In April, 160 researchers — all of whom are Principal Investigators on HDR-funded projects — gathered online for the KI-facilitated 2020 HDR All-hands Meeting. Learn more about this initiative on our website.
