President Trump has provoked the ire of China by ordering the shutdown of their consulate in Houston, Texas within 3 days. It was the first Chinese consulate established in the US, and has been open since 1979, when the United States first recognized the communist government of the People’s Republic of China and established diplomatic relations with the nation.

That recognition required them to acknowledge Taiwan as a part of China. The hot-button issue of Taiwan is thus indirectly associated with this consulate.

It is no wonder that this move to close the consulate (which handles Chinese trade with the region) is being described by Chinese officials as an “unprecedented escalation” in the deterioration of their relationship.
