What's New in the Project?

In our ‘Imminent Death’ education module we asked you ‘How do you say goodbye to a patient in your care who has died?’. We received over 800 responses last year, including:

•    I say rest in peace, and I explain to them everything that we are doing for them…I think that is important
•    By being present for the family. Offering them time to be with patient and offering supportive services if needed
•    I may spend a moment in silence to remember who they were and my role in their life.

Upskilling yourself on sensitive communication, such as breaking news over the phone or telling the truth with kindness, can enhance the care you deliver.

Upskilling yourself can also enable compassionate care and help you to think about your own self-care – how can you grow and develop as a kind-hearted professional?

  • While there is still debate on how to define moral distress, there is the belief that healthcare professionals often experience moral distress during end-of-life care. This chapter provides examples of impossible moral requirements faced by healthcare professionals and the concept of moral distress in the context of end-of-life care.
