ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Justin J. Roberts - Lecturer,  Jewellery specialist and Historian

We’ll be treated to insights from within Sotheby’s famous sale room to discover incredible pieces such the Cartier Valkyrie tiara and jewels saved from the sinking of the Lusitania. Justin will share his knowledge of some of Queen Victoria’s most dazzling pieces, which can be admired at Kensington Palace.

Justin has spent over 20 years as a senior jewellery specialist and historian, writing and lecturing on the subject of antique jewellery from the 18th to the early 20th century. 

In 2002 he became a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain and is also an Associate of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers. In 2011 he was admitted as a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and soon after was awarded the Freedom of the City of London. He holds a degree in Modern History and English Literature and a post graduate diploma in Museum Management and Heritage Interpretation specialising in the 18th century Gothic revival and Strawberry Hill.

During his time at Sotheby’s he has worked on several important jewellery collections including, The Duchess of Windsor, Daisy Fellowes, Lady Hesketh, the Duchess of Roxburghe and Catherine the Great.

 

Dr Nicola Tallis - Historian and Jewellery Specialist

Nicola brings her incredible knowledge to this webinar and shed slight on the fascinating symbolism and intricate meaning behind some of the world’s most important jewels.  We’ll gain an understanding of how jewels have been used to exert political influence over the ages and discreetly convey powerful messages.

Dr. Nicola Tallis graduated from Bath Spa University with a first class BA Hons. degree in History, and has an MA in Public History from Royal Holloway College, University of London. In 2019 she completed her PhD at the University of Winchester: her thesis investigates the jewellery collections of the queens of England between 1445 and 1548. She has been passionate about English history all her life and her debut book, Crown of Blood: The Deadly Inheritance of Lady Jane Grey, was the result of five years of research and received rave reviews. Her subsequent books, Elizabeth’s Rival: The Tumultuous Tales of Lettice Knollys, Countess of Leicester, and Uncrowned Queen: The Fateful Life of Margaret Beaufort, Tudor Matriarch, have also won high praise. Nicola has worked as a researcher, curator and lecturer, and is currently the resident historian at Alison Weir Tours.

Siobhan Clarke - Lecturer and Historian

We’re delighted to welcome back Siobhan who will revisit the endlessly fascinating subject of The British Crown Jewels.  We’ll delve into how the jewels have evolved over the centuries to their current designs and discover some little-known facts about the royals and their jewels

Siobhan Clarke has been a Guide Lecturer for Historic Royal Palaces for 20 years and is based at Hampton Court Palace.  She delivers lectures on Hampton Court, The Tower of London and the Banqueting House, Whitehall Palace. Her experience includes education sessions and tours for schools, universities, travel companies and corporate visitors.
Siobhan has lectured for Cunard, Crystal and Viking cruise lines, the National Trust, the British Museum and the U3A. She has featured on BBC Radio Women's Hour and Television's Secrets of Henry VIII's Palace. She has published two books: A Tudor Christmas, in collaboration with Alison Weir, (Jonathan Cape, 2018) and The Tudors: The Crown, The Dynasty, The Golden Age with Linda Collins (Andre Deutsch, 2019).
