Stand By Me Lesvos and our partners in Moria are #standingwithlebanon and the victims of the devastating explosion last week in Beirut.
PROJECT UPDATE:

The education hub of Moria, our Acαdemiα, was temporarily closed due to facility maintenance in February. During this time, the building was looted and burned. The residents of Moria and the 1,000 students of the Acαdemiα were left with limited resources to continue to encourage learning. This devastation was immediately followed by the looming threat of Coronavirus.
The teachers and the students of Moria Academia suffered a great loss yet were able to improvise, collaborate, and improve. Throughout lockdown, self-organised schools inside Moria took to heart to maintain education.

With the help of our partners, refugee-led Moria Corona Awareness Team (MCAT) and Moria White Helmets (MWH), we launched a new Moria Academia and our most recent project, Moria Lyceum. This way, we can support self-organised schools and continue Education programs on good hygiene, first aid, and even upcycling.

A teacher from one of the self-organised schools of Moria Academia wrote to us. She asked her students what their wishes were. Some replied with drawings.

This will not keep us from delivering the main message:
these camps are not for humans! They need to be closed.

Here people are stripped from their basic rights as refugees! The right to live safely and in dignity with proper services.

Coming Soon: Moria Lyceum
We have been busy starting a new Education center, Moria Lyceum. Moria Lyceum is place for workshops and life skills; It is not a school in the traditional form like our Academia. It focuses more on interactive teaching of practical skills.

We began this project in July with Arabic for children and First Aid classes. We are planning a lot of new activities like a sewing station for repairing clothing and producing masks and even a computer class/workshop.

We will have more information soon! In the meantime, please consider donating so we can continue to support these projects.

Local Engagement
Stand by me Lesvos worry and have the same problems with the local community because Stand by me Lesvos is part of the local community.  We cooperate with both the people and the municipalities of the island to find the most important needs are met.  Some of the local projects we currently run:
We support food distribution in Kalloni for two Greek organisations (EYPOIO and SITIZO). We support two local clubs that sew masks. We have distributed more of 800 face shields that we had from donations or produced ourselves from our 3D printer.
We bought a machine for a local patient who had larynx surgery so he can hear his voice and we paid the electric bill of an association of patients with Sclerosis, as they were struggling financially.

Why is it called Moria Acαdemiα and Lyceum?
The education places in Moria were named after ancient famous schools whose value of education impacted both  East and West. The Academy was founded by Plato in c. 387 BC in Athens. His student, Aristotle, left for Lesvos in 346 BC where he created a new school. Back in Athens, he later founded the Lyceum.

Alexander the Great, brought Greek ideas up to what is today Afghanistan. The area became a cultural centre where Greek, Buddhist and Indian ideas blended.

Thanks to Mission Lifeline for producing this video about the water bottle recycling project we do through MCAT.
MCAT and MWH: Recycling and Waste Management
'You know what we recently heard from a Greek citizen in Mytilene who follows our work? "This seems to be one of the best working recycling project on the island"' - MCAT

MCAT and MWH continue daily with waste management and recycling projects in Moria. Every day about 15,000 empty water bottles from Moria Camp don't end up in general rubbish but go to the recycling plant. We are planning to expand these projects into Mytilene.
