August  2020

Dear Colleagues in the Third Sector

We realised early on during lockdown that there were exceptional things happening in our communities to help the more vulnerable in our villages and towns across Aberdeenshire, and following the launch of the AVA Community Spirit Awards, we have been overwhelmed by the response. You have been nominating in your hundreds and many of the people in your community who have gone out of their way to help, support and put a smile on people’s faces during the pandemic have been recognised.

Many award recipients have been nominated multiple times showing the impact they have had on their community and several of our nominations are very young showing a sense of community spirit from a young age.

We want to celebrate our belief that community spirit is stronger than ever in Aberdeenshire and would love to share images of award winners and their certificates which will be winging their way to winners over the next week either electronically or via Royal Mail. If you are a winner and would be willing to be included in this, please email a photo with you and your certificate, along with your name to communityspirit@avashire.org.uk.

Everyone at AVA would like to add our thanks to those who nominated people, but more importantly we’d like to add our recognition to the award winners as well as those who have not been nominated, but also did some amazingly selfless things to support other people at a time of need…

Thank you from Dan and the whole AVA Team.

AVA member, Deveron District Age Concern (DDAC) have a charity shop in Macduff and are well know to the community in Banffshire for the fantastic work they do supporting older people and giving local community grants and donations from the proceeds of their charity shop.

DDAC were due to celebrate their 35 year anniversary this summer with a bit of a party and awards ceremony thanking the many volunteers who have supported DDRC over the years. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 lockdown meant the volunteers could not come together to mark the occasion. This did not stop the DDAC Committee, led my Shona Sopel (Chair) who brought the celebrations to their dedicated volunteers by way of an afternoon tea, delivered to their home, all on the same day! The delicious afternoon tea was supplied by the Boyndie Visitor Centre.

In total, Shona delivered 21 ‘Aberdeenshire Volunteer Awards’, 3 of these were for over 20 years of service to DDAC. Shona (DDAC Chair) said “We at DDAC are so lucky to have such an amazing group of dedicated and loyal volunteers.”

If you would like to thank your volunteers with an ‘Aberdeenshire Volunteer Award’ visit the AVA website for more information.

EXTRA SUPPORT TO GET HUNTLY’S YOUNG PEOPLE INTO WORK

Barnardo’s Scotland, which runs an employability service for young people in Huntly, has received a £4,370 grant from the Clashindarroch Wind Farm Community Fund established by wind farm owner Vattenfall.

The project, called The project, called " Rural Steps" is based in Huntly and offers tailored support to help young people aged 16 - 29 who are currently not in education, training or employment to achieve their goals.  It is open to young people from Huntly and the surrounding area. “

The grant will allow Barnardo’s Scotland to buy ten laptops and 4G adaptors enabling young people using the service to continue their learning at home and improve their digital skills. Rural Steps Support Worker, Vicky Briggs, provides training and support for each young person, tailored to their individual needs and career goals. The support leads to work placements that help them gain real and valuable experience of work and employer requirements.

Vicky commented: “We are confident this grant will help us to significantly improve the services and support we can offer to young people in Huntly and the surrounding rural areas.  Many young people we support have no access to laptops or PCs making job and college applications, CV writing and creative digital activities almost impossible.”

Cliff Graham, Service Manager for Barnardo’s Works North East Scotland commented: "This will help us to support young people in the area to apply for jobs, improve their digital skills, and start planning for a positive future after lockdown.”

The Clashindarroch Wind Farm Community Fund, which benefits the areas served by the Huntly, Strathbogie and Tap o’ Noth Community Councils and the Cabrach Community Association, is managed on behalf of Vattenfall by Foundation Scotland, Scotland’s community foundation.  Vattenfall donates over £185,000 (index-linked) into the Fund every year for the lifespan of the wind farm. Decisions on grant awards are made by a panel of local people, drawn from the four areas the Fund benefits.

Pete Kunz, Vattenfall’s Service Leader for the Clashindarroch Wind Farm said: “I am delighted that the Clashindarroch Wind Farm Community Fund panel have made this award to Barnardo’s so that they can enable young people to continue their learning at home and improve their digital skills. Vattenfall are keen to encourage young people to consider working in the renewable energy industry which offers many opportunities in a range of professions."

Almost £50,000 was allocated in the last two rounds of funding with 6 grants made in total. Other local organisations benefitting included Alexander Scott's Hospital Eventide Home, Huntly Bowling Club, Friends of Stewarts Hall, North East Scotland Preservation Trust and Huntly Hairst.

The next deadline for grant applications is 7 September, with decisions being made on 26 October 2020.

Support for Aberdeenshire Clubs and Groups

Aberdeenshire Council have launched a new series of online videos to help support and grow healthy clubs and groups across communities, in response to the feed back  received on their clubs and groups survey earlier this year.

In this first video of the Club Support Series, you hear from MyLife Dynamic on behalf of the Scottish Association for Mental Health in this awareness raising video of how mental health affects everyone and how clubs and groups can help support people towards better mental health.

There is also the opportunity to get involved further by looking at SAMH’s Sport and Physical Activity Mental Health Charter which has lots of fantastic resources available for clubs.

Here is the link to the YouTube video - https://youtu.be/xowmfl1dMC8

Further information on the launch is also available on the Live Life Aberdeenshire Facebook pages –  https://www.facebook.com/LiveLifeAberdeenshire/

COVID-19 FUNDING AND FINANCE

AVA has recently developed a file of Covid-19 funding information that can be downloaded and shared. It will be updated on a weekly basis and will show funds that are open at the time of publishing. You can download the file via the funding page of our website.

Applications to a new Aberdeenshire Community Food Fund are now being accepted.

Aberdeenshire Council has made funds available to support local projects tackling food security in North-east communities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

North Aberdeenshire Foodbank recently reported a 75% increase in the number of people fed this year compared to the same timeframe from the start of April to mid-May in 2019 which included a 69% increase in adults and a staggering 90% increase in children.

Ellon and District has posted the largest increase in food support with a 540% rise, with Inverurie showing a 183% increase and Peterhead South and Cruden 148%.

The Aberdeenshire Community Food Fund is for community or resilience groups seeking funding to tackle food security such as constituted groups, registered charities or partnerships involving local organisations with a constituted body as lead partner.

It is not available to individuals or private organisations operating as a business to make a profit.

Aberdeenshire Council, in association with housing associations, employability services and other partners, has developed a new food strategy which is looking at not only the use of foodbanks, but access to good quality affordable food, community allotments and gardens to support our communities.

The council has been allocated just over £1 million for its wider Food Fund from a nationwide Scottish Government allocation of £30million.

The initiatives will address food insecurity for those families and households experiencing poorer socio-economic outcomes or address health barriers and enable a continued response to the needs of communities during transition and recovery.

Applications to the Aberdeenshire Community Food Fund will be assessed by the local area managers office and funds will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If approved, funds will be awarded within 20 working days of the application being made.

For information on the criteria and to submit an application, visit https://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/communities-and-events/funding/community-food-fund/

Free Supportive Outreach Services for Aberdeenshire Men.

Growing numbers of men in the UK are isolated and at risk of loneliness and other health issues. This situation is increasing because of coronavirus; putting more men at risk and meaning they may no longer have access to the same support they once had.

Buchan Community Farm in Peterhead are working alongside Countrymen UK to provide free outreach support services to men in Aberdeenshire who have long term health conditions or are isolated due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Countrymen UK is a national network of farms and gardens that provides opportunities for men with long-term health conditions, mobility issues and isolation to access the therapeutic side of farm and countryside environments. The idea behind Countrymen UK is that all men, regardless of their mobility or cognitive levels, have the opportunity to participate in healthy, active and social activities in a safe and supported countryside or farm environment to the benefit of their physical and mental wellbeing. The network also supports family carers.
However, because of coronavirus, the network is now focussing its attention on the wider community by providing outreach services, aimed at keeping men and their family carers up-to-date with countryside news and services, as well as keeping them motivated and stimulated during lockdown.

Buchan Community Farm is part of the Countrymen UK Network of farms and provides a safe, peaceful, and relaxing environment for people in Aberdeenshire to participate in countryside activities to improve their wellbeing, health and happiness. They have taken on an Outreach Specialist to help coordinate their community efforts, to make contact with individual men and carers, and to collaborate with other organisations to ensure that outreach services get to those most at risk from the effects of being isolated and out of touch.
