  • 7/27 Virtual Panel on Communion Practices and Perspectives

Today, July 27, 2020, at 4:30 PM: Holy Communion in the time of COVID: Eucharistic Practices and Perspectives

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the worship landscape for every congregation. In particular, clergy have expressed a need to understand best practices for offering communion during a time when most churches are conducting virtual worship.

The Lutheran School of Theology,  in partnership with the  Metropolitan Chicago Synod, will be creating virtual space for a panel presentation on Monday, July 27, 4:30 – 6:00 PM, Central Time, to discuss this.

Panelists will provide theological and pastoral rationales and perspectives on what it means for congregations to have diverse communion practices. The presentation will offer participants various ways churches are delivering quality virtual worship. It will also examine critical needs and opinions that inform a congregation’s approach.

Panelists include:

Bishop Leila M. Ortiz, pastor and theologian, Metropolitan Washington D.C. Synod, ELCA

Rev. Manuel Retamoza, senior pastor, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, San Diego, California, and vice president, American Indian and Alaska Native Lutheran Association

Rev. Dr. Carmelo Santos, director for theological diversity & ecumenical and interreligious engagement, ELCA

Rev. Dr. Benjamin Stewart, Gordon A. Braatz Associate Professor of Worship and director, Zygon Center for Religion and Science, LSTC

Dr. Deanna A. Thompson, director, Lutheran Center for Faith, Values and Community and Martin E. Marty Regents Chair in Religion and the Academy, St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

The panel will be introduced and blessed by MCS Bishop Yehiel Curry and moderated by the Rev. Erik Christensen, Pastor to the Community and Director of Worship at LSTC.
