THE CLOVEN Revealed

The Cloven by Garth SteinAt last, after decades of research, writing, and more research related to a pet project of mine, I’ve summed it all up into a very approachable and hopefully engaging book, THE CLOVEN, available in stores and online TODAY!

As some of you know, I’ve been interested in genetically modified organisms for decades. Then in 2012 I read an article about spider goat milk (spider dna mixed with goat embryos) -- watch the video here -- and shortly thereafter, I heard whispers about some kind of “goat man” right here in Seattle, and I began delving deeper.  After years of research I synthesized what I had learned into a 100,000 word manuscript; however, upon review, I decided it was too heavy with science, statistics, and conjecture, rendering it inaccessible to the lay reader.

After a mutual friend introduced me to illustrator Matthew Southworth (author of Stumptown, the comic book series, which became a hit ABC-TV show last year), he and I began a three-year collaboration in an effort to turn my full-length book into an accessible and engaging graphic novel, The Cloven. We think you’ll find this format provocative and entertaining, but for those of you who want more specific details about the Cloven, my research, genetic engineering, and more, we’ll be sharing much from my original book and notes, along with ongoing research at our website: TheClovenProject.com

The Cloven: Book One is the first of our three-book series, available today and published by Fantagraphics. I have to say, the book looks awesome!  Matt and I are holding several live virtual events in the coming months.  Here’s the link to sign up for the virtual book launch later today.  (Signing up helps, even if you might not be able to make the event itself.)

McNally Jackson Independent Booksellers, Tuesday, July 28, 4:00 PM PDT/7:00 PM EDT (Moderated by Maria Dahvana Headley.)

We hope you can join us.

BUY THE BOOK and EVENTS

If you were to buy The Cloven and support one of our wonderful host bookstores—or your own local independent bookseller, if you prefer—that would be swell, but it isn’t a requirement to join our events.  Seeing your smiling face is gift enough for us!  That being said, you probably should buy two books—one for yourself, and one for the younger set in your life (age recommendation for The Cloven from Fantagraphics is 14+, though enlightenment can come at an earlier age these days!).

We will set up some real, actual, in-person events as soon as the Government lets us out of our houses.  Check our website frequently, or sign up for our mailing list, to learn more. https://www.garthstein.com/events/  or https://theclovenproject.com/calendar/

In the meantime, here's a link to the panel Matt and I did for Comic-Con 2020:

Please check out our cool website and tell us what you think. If you like our site, please share the link on your socials (as they say in Hollywood), and spread the word.  Content will be added on a regular basis!  TheClovenProject.com

Finally, if you have any questions, comments, or rave reviews, please share them with us, or leave a review on one of those websites with the star system.  (Five is the preferred star rating.  Just saying.)  And on my socials including Facebook.  Oh, and if you wonder about the authenticity of Aerie Farms on Vashon Island, Eagle Rock Laboratories near Fall City, or Prometheus Industries in general, remember that sometimes the only way we can face reality is by pretending it isn’t real...

Seattle Times Interview

In the Sunday Seattle Times:

Author Garth Stein and artist Matthew Southworth are like two guys who were thinking about starting a band together — only they started a book instead...
