Welcome to Music Australia's August e-News.
This month was to feature our industry Roundtable and a meeting of our Councillor’s Network, which regrettably have both been cancelled due to the pandemic. Because of the pandemic we thought it would be fitting to facilitate instead a video check-in with some key organisations which have the welfare of people in the music industry at the heart of what they do: Support Act, CrewCare, Entertainment Assist, MEAA and the Arts Wellbeing Collective. We delve further into this project here.
We would like to thank the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age for their great review of our book Musicians & Addiction: Research and Recovery Stories, describing it as "absorbing" with "very human tales". We would also like to thank the fabulous Ruth Mulvey who is stepping down as leader of our Music: Count Us In program to have a baby. She is succeeded by Rachel Whealy who is well known for her work in the Australian music and arts industry. She has been the Orchestra Manager of Sydney Symphony Orchestra, National Choral Program Manager with Gondwana Choirs, Orchestral Program Manager with Sydney Youth Orchestras, Producer, Chorus Oz with Philharmonia Choirs, and Events and Philanthropy Manager at the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra (founded by esteemed music educator and conductor Richard Gill AO). Rachel has a background in classroom music teaching and has directed the orchestras, choirs and ensembles at several of Sydney’s most prominent private schools. She is also a professional cellist and performs regularly with orchestras, ensembles and commercial artists around the country. She recently appeared on the Morning Show playing cello with Missy Higgins! We congratulate Rachel on her appointment, and wish Ruth all the best, who has made an outstanding contribution.
