“God is both finite and infinite.  In creation the finite aspect of God is emphasized.  But pure Spirit, in which creation is dissolved in Him, reflects Infinitude.  Some devotees like the finite expression of God, whereas others prefer the infinite aspect of the Divine.  Mother Yasoda* loved and found God in her son, Krishna.”    -- Paramahansa Yogananda, SRF Lessons.
(*It is spelled "Jasoda" in Lesson 94).

Dear Families:

The San Diego Temple Sunday School Program is pleased to offer this August communique to the parents of Sunday School children. Our goal is to provide you with engaging resources (e.g., stories, meditations, affirmations and activities) that you may share with your child(ren). These are intended to inspire them to love God, live happy, balanced lives, and develop a personal relationship with God through regular meditation.

Because the observance of Janmashtami, the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth, is on August 11th, our focus in this month’s communique is on Bhagavan Krishna.  We have included a delightful story, “The Woman Who Loved God as Her Son,” from the SRF Lessons about Lord Krishna when he was a little boy. The story, (see link)  http://sandiegotemple.org/wp-content/uploads/Yasoda-Story-Final-corrected.pdf shows that God can come to us in a very personal way, like the relationship between a mother and a child. At the end of the story are Discussion Questions you may use to have a conversation with your child(ren). Finally, for the creative and fun element we strive to offer in Sunday School, you'll find two Coloring Sheets, that are related to the story, for your child(ren) to choose from.

We invite you to practice the following Affirmations with your child.  Affirmations help us to develop devotion and to attune our mind and will to the consciousness and will of God. They can be repeated multiple times, progressing from loud to whispering to mental repetition, for about 1 to 2 minutes.
  • My Divine Mother, naughty or good, I am Thy child.  I know you will always love me, no mater what mischief I may get into.
  • Like little Krishna, I will radiate love and goodwill to others so God's love will flow through me.
  • Lord Krishna, when i feel the love from my parents, my friends and my pets, I feel Your love.

In addition to the resources offered in these monthly communiques, you, of course, are welcome to provide other spiritual instruction in your homes.  You can lead your child(ren) in a short meditation, tell stories from Autobiography of a Yogi and Mejda, or paraphrase simple stories from the SRF lessons, if your child(ren) is/are interested.

During this August, we sincerely hope that you will be able to enjoy the first on-line SRF Convocation! Through your own ongoing meditation and attunement, we hope that you and your child(ren) continue to be spiritually uplifted. May you always feel God and Guru’s loving Presence and their unceasing blessings.

In divine friendship,
