Announcing the Visual Arts Scholarship for Emerging Artists!
gay Mitchell and Mark Johnston, two long-standing members of our community, came to us with the offer of a seed donation of $5000 and a vision: “Both Mark and I grew up in amazing families that actively participated in the Arts, as artists and audience. Our parents who mentored us, practiced sharing their time and resources, and now, it’s our turn to contribute to our community. By choosing adolescents as recipients for this fund, we acknowledge the incredible potential of young people as they are developing as creative beings. We hope this new step will provide educational courses, outside regular school where the visual arts are not considered a priority or essential. We believe engagement with the arts is vital for teens to focus, explore and grow as people. The Arts in our community are something all of us can be part of, throughout our lives.”
A goal of $15,000 was set for the campaign. Once all the funds are raised, they will be managed as an endowment by the Port Moody Foundation, with the dividends to be used for at least two scholarships a year for low income youth to attend visual arts classes at PoMoArts.
Aultrust Financial immediately responded to our call for support with a matching donation of $5000, stating, “One of our core values at Aultrust is to contribute through building meaningful relationships with community groups. PoMoArts has been a pillar of the Port Moody community for more than 20 years, promoting and celebrating artistic initiatives for the City of the Arts. Supporting and promoting local artists is crucial in encouraging young artists to succeed, which is why our new project at 3000 Henry will feature an open gallery concept within the lobby to help showcase local art.”
Thank you gay, Mark, and Aultrust Financial for your community contributions!
