What Do We Need This Week?

We need walnut litter. If you buy it at Petsmart in Bee Cave, across from the Hill Country Galleria, ask a store employee to put it inside the Cat Adoption Center and we’ll pick it up there.

Foster Hospice

You may have had to cope with the death of a loved pet. You knew when you adopted him that you’d probably outlive him, but that’s no solace for the pain you feel. Each fur baby carves a unique notch in your heart.

Thundering Paws gives every animal who comes to us a life-long loving home, preferably by finding great adoptive homes. But some don’t find other homes. As a no-kill sanctuary, we give the best life we can to those whose live here.

Earlier this year I went to a shelter that is doing its utmost best to achieve no-kill status. I picked up three mom cats with a total of 13 kittens. A staff member there asked if we took adults, and pointed to a beautiful white kitty with calico markings. Thus Mia came to us.
Though only about five years old, Mia exhibited health issues at her first foster home. The foster family worked with us to find solutions. Finally, an ultrasound showed a probable intestinal lymphoma, a form of cancer. As we give our adopters full disclosure, we knew Mia’s chances for adoption were slim.

Who knows what kind of life Mia had before? Probably not great. She was declawed on all four feet. At five years old, she ended up at a shelter.

She’s not very tolerant of other animals. Our “only” rooms are few and full, and we certainly didn’t want her in a cage, so we had to find her a placement. We created the Foster Hospice.

Mia now has a secure home to live out her life. She adores her foster mom and leaves her comfy bed to be near her. She’s eating like a pig and even gaining a little weight. As long as she’s a happy kitty, she will have a happy home. When the time comes to let her go, her foster mom will be with her.

You are our hope for this program. We’ll supply you with food, litter boxes, cat beds, scratching posts, medications, vet care, phone and email consultations, and, of course, a kitty. We ask you to buy cat litter but if you can’t, we’ll supply that, too. You give your love, and you’ll definitely receive as much as you give.
Malcolm, now 14, was adopted as a kitten to a loving family. His dad had a successful career creating and working events. How quickly one’s livelihood can go up in smoke! I’m sure the family considers it fortunate that they were able to sell their house; that they had a house to sell; that Malcolm’s mom still has a job. And, finally, that they could return Malcolm at any time in his life to Thundering Paws.

Malcolm has a lesion in his abdomen. Without a biopsy, which is costly and wouldn’t change the course of his treatment, we don’t know what type of lesion it is. He has hyperthyroidism and takes a pill daily in his canned food. He has lost muscle mass in his hind legs and moves around less than a youngster. He absolutely HATES cats, charging and attacking them. But he’s a lover boy to people and he SO wants company! We don’t know how long he has to live but we’d like that time to be in a loving foster home.

If you have no other cats, please consider giving Malcolm a forever foster home! Your only risk is your sadness at losing him, but you risk that with any love. If he doesn’t work out, we take him back.

We are often contacted about cats, often senior, whose owners have died or gone into a facility that doesn’t allow animals. As the pandemic worsens, this scenario increases, as well as our need for Hospice Fosters (or something along those lines.)
