Custom tools and notes from the lab

Welcome to a quick update from our shop.

We have been busy this summer, preparing some new products that will be released later this year as well as a big update to the Grimoire is in the works (currently at 388 pages) that will be published in the fourth quarter of the year.

From now on, the booklet shown below with the introductory Telemeter course is included for free with every order (as long as stocks last), including a Telemeter model to build yourself (just like in the online course).

Further, we have been developing and creating many custom projects for mainly three groups of users of our instruments: enthusiasts who wanted their individual, specific latitude on a quadrant for naked-eye astronomy or urban exploration purposes; teachers and instructors who use simplified or enlarged versions of our tools to visualize concepts of natural philosophy, and finally specialized units of professionals who have special requirements for their specific jobs.

If you have an idea or a suggestion for a project, feel free to contact us for a quote or some creative sparring.

Regarding shipping rates: While Corona and mitigation measures are continuing to keep the world in check, we can at least share an update to shipping rates to the U.S.: we have been able to slash the rate almost in half, from 53 to 33 Euro with tracked and insured DHL. That's far from pre-Corona shipping rates, but it's a move in the right direction.

Thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support; it means a lot!

The Wndsn Monthly Challenge continues:

Each month we are exploring one of the many useful functions of the Wndsn Telemeter. We post instructions and invite you to try out each exercise, either to practice what you know or to learn something new. If you have a Telemeter and want to start using it, this is perfect for you. Make this the year you get to grips with essential navigation skills by following along.

What you'll need:

As always, we will make special rewards available for people who participate in this challenge during the year, as we see fit.

Here is this month's installment:

Using the thumb as caliper

Sometimes, especially when measuring from within structures, the Telemeter has to be held against the light, which puts the alpha scale in the shadow and makes it hard or even impossible to read.

A workaround is to make use of contrast, dark against light.

  • The lower bound, the zero on the scale, is equivalent to the lower bound of the hole that the measuring string is threaded through.
  • The upper bound, the angular size we want to determine and read on the scale, can be taken by holding a finger perpendicular to the scale, sliding alongside the scale like a caliper until the edge of the finger marks the upper bound of the object.

Now, taking down the instrument, we can read, at the finger that is still in position, the desired angular size.

This trick can be applied using any of our Telemeters.

No task this time; only this technique. Try it out, maybe you can think of an improvement. Report your insights in text or picture and share the result on Instagram with the hashtag #wndsnmonthlychallenge.

New products will be announced first in this newsletter; please stay tuned for more. Please note that due to high demand, some designs may be out of stock fast. See what's in stock in the New Arrivals stream.
