Hi, Lean In family!

How has your start to the second half of the year 2020 been?

Time is passing us by in a blink of an eye. I hope you’re doing well during the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO). Most of us are getting back to our usual life while adapting to the new norm. However, the pandemic is not over yet, so we still have to be cautious and take care of ourselves and our loved ones.

We, at Lean In Malaysia, would like to express our appreciation to the community for supporting our cause for gender equality. As the statistics by the Women’s Aid Organisation showed, there was a 44% increase in hotline calls and WhatsApp enquiries about domestic violence during the MCO. Women and girls were also disproportionately impacted economically by the MCO because of their weaker financial power – i.e., women earn less and thus are able to save less. Furthermore, they are more likely to work in the informal work sector which provides lesser job security.

We are doing our best to combat these issues. There is a saying, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

Hence, we have designed a series of coffee chats with different topics ranging from work-from-home (WFH) productivity, personal finance management to personal branding. Our goal is to empower, educate and enable more women and men to stand up for themselves and help the community too! If you missed the sessions, no worries, just look for ‘Lean In Malaysia’ on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Things are moving slowly but surely. The team is pulling resources together for the purposes of creating better programs for everyone. If you have any ideas or suggestions to grow together with us, just drop us an e-mail or message us on Facebook or Instagram.

We hope to meet you soon. Stay safe and take good care of yourselves.

Last but not least, Selamat Hari Raya Haji to our Muslim friends! May the joy of this festive season light your life with love, peace and hope.

With love,

Zoom Meet-Up: ‘Your childhood self’

This Zoom meet-up was our second one since the pandemic started. It was led by Ee Lee Lee, a Public Mutual Fund advisor, a Zerowaste Lifestyle Advocate, and a stay-at-home mum to four outstanding kids.

The circle members were given the opportunity to reflect on their past and connect with their younger selves. The whole experience was a bittersweet one. Some of the members struggled going back to their childhood but it comforted them to realise that their pasts have shaped them to be who they are and enabled them to move forward as adults.

The sharing session brought us closer as a group and helped us to understand and help each other better during these challenging times and lean in.
Upcoming Event: World Elephant Day celebration by Lean In Malaysia Sabah
Mark the date: 12th August 2020!

What is the World Elephant Day (WED) about?

World Elephant Day is an international event held annually on August 12 dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants.

Why are we celebrating WED?

The goal of WED is to create awareness of the urgent plight of African and Asian elephants, and to share knowledge and positive solutions for the better care and management of elephants.

How are we celebrating WED?

We will produce and sell face masks made from fabric with a Borneo motif. This is a collaboration between Lean In Malaysia Sabah and Changgih Design, a social enterprise that empowers women with skill development and vocational opportunities so that these women can support their families without having to leave home.

The masks come with an elephant embroidery logo. We hope that the masks can carry and spread the awareness message about the conservation of our precious Bornean elephants.

How can the public support the campaign?

By buying the mask, you'll become a Bornean elephant guardian and help to increase the awareness of Malaysians about the plight of Bornean elephants. At the same time, you will help the artisans in their livelihood; these women come from various villages in Sabah and need your help to support their families.

Lean In Malaysia recommends ...
Here are monthly pop culture recommendations on the topic of women's rights.

This book (first published in 2016) and the movie by the same name (released in 2019) chronicle the story of a young Korean woman as told from the eyes of her male psychiatrist: her birth; her teenage years; her young adulthood and also motherhood.

The book and the movie touch on important issues, namely the patriarchal society of South Korea and how it relates to other cultures such as India and countries in the Middle East.

Some of these issues include society’s preference for male babies, the gender discrimination that follows women at every step of their lives (whether it is personally or professionally) as well as the general conservatism of South Korea despite it being one of one the most developed economies.

The book and the movie received criticisms and caused tension in South Korea. However, the message proved to be crucial and gives insight to the nature of patriarchy which exists in most parts of the world, including today.
