Featured Artists for August 2020
Nancy Anderson and J.J. Jones

Nancy Anderson of Albany and JJ Jones of Corvallis are the featured artists for August at Gallery Calapooia.
Nancy Anderson,     Geraniums
Nancy has been a member of Gallery Calapooia since 2014 and her work includes calligraphy as well as collage and cut paper. For this August featured artist show, Nancy is highlighting her collage and cut paper creations. The theme is summer in Oregon and her art showcases the beauty of the flowers of this season and landscapes of the area. The colors are vibrant, bold and crisp. She also has some smaller matted pieces with hand lettered quotes to inspire and amuse and a wide selection of handmade cards for all occasions.

When Nancy joined the gallery, her art was centered on calligraphy and words. She collects inspiring quotes, meaningful phrases and fun words that speak to her heart. These have been her primary focus but she is increasingly working in layers with cut paper and collage. Sometimes she adds a layer of lettering but other times she does not.

Nancy paints backgrounds in both watercolors and acrylics. She also paint sheets of paper for cutting and building layers to create images. She generally doesn’t have a plan when she works. She just launches into the creative process and plays with art materials. Sometimes the images are created and the words are then added into the piece. Other times she will start by lettering a poem or phrase which then suggest what images she wants to create

J.J. During our December public reception, greeting visitors in front of his panel. Hopefully we will be able to have actual, not virtual, receptions sometime soon. Notice the wide variety of turned objects, including the French rolling pins on the right. J.J. will be on hand during the Gallery's Virtual Reception on August 7, 6 PM. He will be speaking about his work.
J.J. Jones loves wood! Since 1985 he has been doing lathe work with his favorite medium. He creates a variety of items, ranging from large sculptural vases to smaller items like pepper grinders and more recently, French-style rolling pins. He also has a wide variety of bowls and vases that highlight the grain of the wood he is using.

While he loves wood of all sorts, Oregon myrtle wood and maple burls are his favorite. According to Wikipedia, a burl is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. J. J. adds “A burl is caused by some kind of stress to the tree – an injury, a virus or fungus, insect infestation or mold growth. From the outside of the tree, a burl looks like a bump, but for woodworkers, the stress results in a uniquely patterned wood highly prized for its beauty.”

In addition to the burl woods, he uses hawthorn, elm, mahogany, cherry, mimosa, walnut, and Osage orange to name a few – each wood different to work with and beautiful in its own way. He does not cut down a tree for its wood, but he receives wood from trees other people cut down for thinning or because they are blown down.

J. J. uses three different lathes to make his works. He says, “I have three lathes at this time. One is a mini lathe for small turnings. My primary lathe will turn an item twenty-four inches in diameter by thirty six inches in length. A friend and I built my largest lathe which can turn forty plus inches in diameter and five feet in length.”
A few more items from J.J. On the left are two turned vases while on the right is a turned bowl.
We Are Open!
New Gallery Procedures
Masks will be required for all visitors and we will have some disposable masks available if you don't have your own. In addition, two of our members (Karen Miller and Pat Spark) will have wonderful cloth masks for sale.  We encourage people to use the hand sanitizer station at the door.  The number of customers in the Gallery will be limited to no more than 8 at a time, with a couple being counted as one person. This is to help maintain social distancing. For the time being, our restrooms are  closed to the public.

We have a new credit card system that should make things faster and will not require a signature on the tablet device. This will help keep things cleaner when you are making your purchases. In addition, we are cleaning touched surfaces, such as the sales desk after each transaction.

Our tentative operating hours are 11 – 3 and we are open Tuesday through Saturday.

However, remember that you can always make an appointment to come into the Gallery. We would love to meet you personally at the gallery at another prearranged time so that you can shop for that special item.  Call 541-971-5701.

In addition to the bright mask colors, Pat is also dyeing more mellow, earthy colors. She is drawing on some of them to add a little fun!

News from Gallery Members
Marilyn Lindsley
Marilyn participated in the Salem Art Association's Virtual Art Fair, July 17 - 19 (and it was extended another week.)  This was the online replacement for the 2020 Bush Pasture Park Art Fair and Festival which had been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Each artist will had a page with photos and links to online sales opportunities.

The Salem Art Association did a wonderful job with this virtual art fair. When you went to their site during the two weeks it was available, you saw this graphic of the "art fair map". (NOTE: these are screen shots and the links are no longer active.)
You could then click on the jewelry graphic and you found a list of artists who work in the various jewelry media. (NOTE: these are screen shots and the links are no longer active.)
Then you could link to "the booth" of each artist. Here is Marilyn's booth. The SAA had made a great video of Marilyn explaining her work - almost as though you were in her booth talking to her!  From this virtual booth, you could link to her website. It was a very nicely done virtual art fair. Kudos to the Salem Art Association for promoting their artists and still keeping us safe during Covid. (NOTE: these are screen shots and the links are no longer active.)
