New partners, new energy

Dear reader,

Up and running since 2015, the activities and research from the African Policy Dialogues (APDs) – led by INCLUDE platform members – have contributed insights and information to inform national policy and implementation in eight African countries. Last month, it was time for the third wave of APDs to start. The new APDs in Mali, Mozambique and Niger will focus on inclusive policy for youth, women and smallholder farmers. During their online launch, insights and experiences from previously established networks were shared with the new APDs.

Collaborative spirit at COVID-19 research programme launch

Having exposed global weaknesses and risks, as well as similarities and differences in the impacts of and policy responses to the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic, this situation presents a timely opportunity for INCLUDE to launch a research programme looking into COVID-19 impacts on the African continent. The first meeting of this programme was high energy and resulted in the sharing of ideas between the 12 research group representatives – all-in-all a strong kick-off for the programme.

Kind regards,

On youth employment research
Robust data and meaningful gender analysis are key

Research projects seeking to have an inclusive and sustainable impact on economic opportunities for youth in Africa must integrate meaningful gender analysis into their design and throughout project cycles. In this post, researchers from the ‘Boosting Decent Employment for Africa’s Youth’ joint initiative, share tools, strategies and insights on how to do so.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, INCLUDE, IDRC and ILO, partners in the joint initiative, adapt research strategies to generate novel evidence. Post-COVID policy responses in Africa: why robust data is key is established for the ‘Decent Jobs for Youth’ global initiative to elaborate on how this is being done.

Building upon INCLUDE’s extensive work on social protection and cash transfers, Marleen Dekker (INCLUDE coordinator) reflects in Volkskrant on the idea of cash transfers to support the African population deal with the effects of the corona crisis (in Dutch).

INCLUDE research

INCLUDE’s first research programme may be at an end, but its (forthcoming) findings continue to be relevant. Furthermore, these published papers from the ‘Assumptions Programme’ also show an ongoing momentum for useful research project outcomes on the role of civil society organizations.
