A New Year Expedition

The Weddell Sea Expedition 2019 departs in January, exploring one of the harshest regions of Antarctica to gather vital data on the rare and little studied species of marine life which inhabit the icy western Weddell Sea ecosystem. The team will also attempt to locate and survey the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship 'Endurance'.

The expedition team of over thirty scientists, surveyors and other researchers, many of whom are based with us at the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI), will be led by incoming Friends of SPRI Chairman Dr John Shears, with the scientific programme led by SPRI Director Professor Julian Dowdeswell.

BBC Radio 3

SPRI Senior Academic, Dr Michael Bravo, and FoSPRI Arctic Artist in Residence 2017, Kat Austen, recently took part in BBC Radio 3 programme 'Free Thinking' to talk about the subject of Ice.
