SBJ's Smith broke the news early yesterday that Vanderbilt had selected NBA G League Prez Turner as its new AD. VU Chancellor Zeppos on his hire, "Malcolm is a proven executive with deep expertise in multiple business disciplines including management, marketing and development across the sports landscape of teams, leagues, facilities and major events. […] Malcolm is a problem solver with a unique ability to bring people together around a common vision. I am confident that he will have an immediate and profound impact on the Commodores’ success as an elite athletics program by building new relationships and new sources of revenue, while recruiting and retaining extraordinarily talented coaches, students and staff." Korn Ferry with the assist. (link, link); The Tennessean's Sparks gets more from Zeppos, "If you look back and say, 'What was (college athletics) like in 2002, and what is it like today?' I don’t think anyone could’ve imagined or predicted (the differences). So what I really wanted was somebody who could, as we say, skate to where the puck is going. The business background was very important to me. But the strategic thinking and ability to say, 'This is where this should be going,' was very, very important to me." Turner points to his background in consulting - both at Wasserman & OnSport - as key to quickly digging in & identifying core issues to be addressed. (link)
With reports of the AAC pushing some members of the league to sign a grant of rights, you had to know another piece was coming on which conference brand has the biggest opportunity if there's another round of realignment. The Athletic's Mandel dives in on why it's UCF & why the Big 12 should call on the Knights. Mandel: "Whereas two years ago UCF was just one of about six semi-realistic candidates (along with rival USF, Cincinnati, Connecticut, BYU and Houston) vying for a rose from Bob Bowlsby, the program presumably would be a clear favorite today. […] It’s not too late to right a wrong, Big 12. Go out and grab UCF while you still can, because the school may soon be facing a tough decision." Mandel goes on to note that 3x or 4x annual media revenues from the AAC still pales in comparison to the $36.5M Big 12 schools took home last year (not including Tier 3 cash), "Why be reactionary when you can be proactive for a change, Big 12?" (link)
A court case involving College of Charleston leadership & former Baseball HC Heath has reached the point where a federal judge has asked the university to turn over electronics & all communications to & from Cougars AD Roberts & current Baseball skipper Holbrook. Heath continues to maintain Roberts knew he wanted to hire Holbrook as the successor even while Heath was still employed. Back in October a forensics expert reviewed Roberts' computer, but it was setup to only keep messages back 30 days. (link)
Syracuse AD Wildhack on the issue of a succession plan for MBB HC Boeheim, "when you have a Hall of Fame coach that continues to have the success that he's had, my personal assessment is you don't need to be in a rush to announce a succession plan." "Good conversations" continue with Nike, the Carrier Dome revamp is still on schedule for a Fall 2020 completion, says he'll talk to FB HC Babers about his deal when the time is right, "Every negotiation is different. I've been through 1,000 of them at ESPN. Sometimes it can get done in 10 minutes. Sometimes it takes six months." (link)
Hawaii's Matlin reviews the state of UH's department, points to new deals with the likes of Under Armour & Hawaiian Airlines that have saved upwards of $800K, along with a 30% increase in revenues that's working to offset a deficit that's been cut to $1.7M. "One area that we need to improve on is fundraising and we’re working on that. An area where we are ahead of our peers is ticket sales. That said, we still need to have more ticket sales. I think in 11 out of 13 areas that we evaluated, we are even or above our peers." Travel subsidies = $2.1M & that's just for Mountain West squads to visit the island. Incremental costs due to travel = $3M. Outsourcing sponsorship sales to IMG College returned $2.7M in Y1, $600K more than was generated annually from 2005 to 2017. (link)
Boise State has launched a Women's Sports Fund with aims of generating $100K as the wife of Broncos AD Apsey is behind the idea. Teresa Apsey: "All the women’s sports teams are just rocking it, and they don’t get the support like the men’s teams do. That’s just the nature of the world. So I’m like, 'What can we do?' That’s kind of the brain child for this. [...] The whole Women’s Sports Fund, it’s not just financial. It’s trying to get more people to attend their games and just getting to know them and finding out how amazing they are. These women are great role models for younger kids." (link); The NCAA has committed to a five-year, $2.5M with Habitat for Humanity's disaster response program. Prez Emmert: "A long-term relationship with Habitat gives us the capability to help impacted communities across our country recover in a meaningful way. Our goal is to be present where the need is greatest, in regions still recovering from past natural disasters and standing ready to support relief following future events." (link)
Higher Education: As you might imagine, Ohio State Prez Drake received a bevy of emails from those who wanted to voice their opinion on the Urban Meyer situation earlier in the Fall. Inside Higher Ed offers a cross-section of the communications. "At least 20 people" threatened to withhold donations, some used derogatory language toward Drake & both sides of the issue were supported. (link); There seems to be some drama at Oklahoma as new OU Prez Gallogly inherited a seemingly undesirable budget situation in Norman from former Prez Boren. Following an open letter Boren penned in the summer to defend the state of affairs he left the institution, Gallogly reportedly told an intermediate, "You tell him that I am the meanest son of a bitch he has ever seen, and if he ever crosses me again, I will destroy him." Well then. More. (link)

New order: Delta One, Premium Select/First Class, Comfort, Sky Priority, Main Cabin 1, Main Cabin 2, Main Cabin 3, Basic Economy. (link); Higher above the clouds, AT&T says it's launched the last new DirecTV satellite that will circle the globe & deliver a TV signal. It's That Time of Year: North Dakota State AD Larsen calls his FB job one of the most "unique," "best," yet "hardest" in all of FCS. Won't rush the decision, says there are some internal candidates. (link); Boston College HC Addazio gets an extension through 2022. (link); Austin Peay AD Harrison goes with Mississippi State AC & former Louisiana HC Hudspeth for his opening in Clarksville. (link); Drake AD Hardin believes he needs someone who really understands the culture & vibe of the university. (link); Kansas State AD Taylor says most of his HC interviews took place in NYC, calls the process "stressful," notes inaccuracies in the media, "That's really important to stay focused on the candidates you are talking to because when the stuff that's out there that's not accurate (gets around) it messes up those candidates that you're talking to because then they get nervous - are you talking to so and so, am I still part of the deal. That's when the search firm really comes in handy because they keep those candidates involved that you want to stay involved as you begin to pare it down." More. (link - video, link - transcript); ESPN's Bonagura: "During Gary Andersen's introductory press conference, Utah State AD John Hartwell says USU deserves to have a home-and-home with Utah -- indicated 2-for-1 doesn't work for USU anymore." (link); Another $50K bound for UAB's Clark with Sporting News naming him CoY. (link)
More Personnel: American AD Walker added to the university's President's Cabinet. (link); Louisville AD Tyra will jump right back into another search as Men's Soccer HC Lolla steps down on the grounds of being "called out of my success because there is something that I need to go to." (link); Former ad sales boss at NBC Gambelli is the new marketing chief at Fox as EVP of Ad Sales Lefkowitz, SVP of Ad Sales Denby and SVP Piasecki will no longer be a part of Fox when it sells most of its holdings to Disney next year. NBC exec Winter, who led the networks efforts behind the Super Bowl and the Olympics, could be joining Fox, as well. (link); KORE Software has added San Francisco 49ers Prez & CEO of Elevate Sports Ventures Guido to its board. (link)
New FB kick-off rules led to a 20% reduction in returns at the FBS level. Fair catches were signaled for 10% of the time. More: "The rate of balls kicked into or through the end zone for touchbacks was the same as last year, at 43 percent." (link)
Missouri lawmakers are pushing sports gambling legislation forward that includes a 1% integrity fee, .25% of which "would be paid to the NCAA for wagers placed on games including at least one FBS football team or one Division I men’s basketball team." The bill by Representative Smith indicates the royalty proceeds could only be used for athletics compliance. As noted by Sports Handle, "This is the first time a bill has been filed anywhere in the U.S. that specifically earmarks a so-called royalty payment to the NCAA." (link)
As part of the America East's new 'AE Voices' series, UMBC Women's Soccer student-athlete Krinetz details her struggle with anxiety. Krinetz points to identifying anxiety attacks regularly in high school, an uptick in college, a battle with two rotator cuff injuries that led to depression symptoms & dealing with her Dad's open heart surgery. "Healing is not at all linear. I still have my good and bad days, and I still have to work on myself and my mental health daily. Through this whole process I realized that it’s completely okay to not be okay. I realized my passion for all things mental health and helping people break the stigma. I realized how much I want to help break the silence in the athletic community around mental health. Admitting you need help doesn’t make you weak, it doesn’t make you any less of an athlete, it doesn’t make anyone see you any different. It’s okay to not be okay." (link)
Texas AD Del Conte has driven the bus in Austin for a year now, "We have said from the start that together we can accomplish great things and put the 'T' back in Texas, if we are all rowing in the same direction. Thus, much of this first year has been about planning, learning, understanding, and pulling together. With our staff, who play the vital role of leading the way and setting the standard, I've shared my father's mantra that I live by -- Be humble, serve others, and be honest. We are servant-leaders, and that's the approach we've taken across the board in our athletics department." Del Conte points to a list of facility projects that show everyone is getting on the same page including those at baseball, swim/dive, softball, soccer, football, track & field, as well as the new Hall of Fame. In closing, "All of this is because our focus is on 'we' and not 'me.' We appreciate you, are grateful for a truly amazing year, and we still need your help as we continue to put the 'T' back in Texas. Let's do this together!" (link)
Mississippi State boss Cohen with part one of a three segment Q&A with the Starkville Daily News. Cohen says the meeting date with Ole Miss AD Bjork & SEC Commish Sankey has not been set yet, overall doesn't think anything has really changed with the Egg Bowl rivalry over the last handful of years. Would love to start the FB season over again, but happy with how the Bulldogs came together under first-year HC Moorhead. (link)
Boston College Magazine followed around Eagles AD Jarmond during a FB gameday this Fall. For a Noon kick, Jarmond hit campus at 6a to get a run in, started with a 7:30a security & staffing meeting, weaved in & out of tents & tailgates to engage with fans, donors parents around 9:30a, made sure he was in place to encourage all FB student-athletes during the Eagle Walk. Jarmond on success, "I always say this is so fragile." More. (link)

Deputy AD for Communications Joos points to two rough weather games, says overall, "It’s something that we evaluate, we work on every day." Student ticket packages dropped from 6,083 in '17 to 4,100 in '18, a revenue loss of $454K. Joos indicates the external team will take a hard look at pricing across the board. (link)
