DBS NEWSLETTER

14th December 2018

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

Christmas has certainly been celebrated at DBS this week, from the EY Christmas Show to the choir singing wonderful carols at the end of school today. At this festive time it is appropriate to turn our thoughts to those less fortunate than ourselves, and I am delighted to report that a huge total of THB 276,177 was raised at Denla Fest. This is a wonderful testament to the generosity of the DBS community. In particular, we are very grateful to the parents who contributed so much to the event. In fact, the total is so much, that we are able to use some of it for the Pak Kret charities, selected by the students, while most will go to the Khlong Toey charity.

You will read later on in the Newsletter about student successes, including the International History Bowl and Bee. Individual students have excelled, too. Toong Toong and Pan in the Tri Kids Thailand 2018 Triathlon; and Nammon, in Y7, who has been given the Outstanding Youth 2019 award from the Ministry of Education.

Students have had a very busy week. There have been keenly fought House basketball and debating competitions. There was also a fascinating Y4 and Y5 trip to the Shin Kwang Hwa paper factory in Samut Sakhon.

DBS is a truly exceptional community, and the students deserve a rest this holiday. Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy New Year,

Mark McVeigh
Principal
Denla British School, Bangkok

Y4 and Y5 students went to the Shin Kwang Hwa paper factory in Samut Sakhon, Thailand on Tuesday. They learned how to use trees, such as mulberry which contains high fibre in the bark, to make paper. The fibre from the bark needs to be washed and bleached in order to make paper pulp. The bleached fibre looks just like noodles! They also learned how thin and high quality Chinese calligraphy paper is handmade. Everyone made their own paper, and decorated it the way they wanted. They also made paper frames, cards, fans, and paper birds to take home.
DBS Students from Y2 upwards were presented with their results and certificates for the online Bebras Computational Thinking Contest, taken in November. DBS scored very highly in all 4 age groups with scores above average in all, against over 175,000 other students worldwide. Congratulations to all, especially our school champions:

Y8 Fern, Y7 JK, Y6 Nacho, Y5 Freddie and Peak, Y4 Caolan, Y3 Kang Kang and Arin, Y2 Au.

Nine DBS students from Y6 and above ranked exceptionally well, scored in the top 10% of students worldwide and have been invited to compete in the 2019 TCS Oxford Computing Challenge in March. Mrs Hall will hold an extra lunchtime club so they can learn the advanced coding techniques required to compete. Congratulations to the Elite Coders; Fern, JK, Nacho, Ethan, Minnie, Aom, Q, Athens and Baibua.

Our DBS team of Y6-Y8 Historians competed in the International History Bee and Bowl in Bang Na on Saturday. The children did an absolutely amazing job and conducted themselves in an exemplary manor. Overall, DBS were semi-finalists in the Thailand division. Individually, four out of the six students are now through to the Asian finals, which will take place in June in Khao Lak, to compete against schools from Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China.

Huge congratulations to our Head Boy, Yoyo in Y8, who has qualified for the World Geography Championships in 2020. Yoyo scored so well in the qualifying exam that he is straight through to the world finals which are often held in Berlin. We wish you the very best of luck in your training!

Congratulations to Aom, Proud, Kaopun, Felicia, Bell and Ping in Y7, for their wonderful passport design for Denla 5 Well-Being week.
Massive congratulations go to Nammon, in Y7, who has been given the Outstanding Youth 2019 award from the Ministry of Education.

DBS is very proud of you, Nammon!
