12 Days of Christmas
Shepherds
Day 9 of The 12 Days of Christmas +1, a series of thoughts on the holiday season

"When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, 'Let's go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.'" Luke 2:15

Of all the people we encounter during the events of our Savior's birth, I
have always imagined being with the shepherds. When you think about the birth of royalty, rarely, if ever, would the commoners be involved. The people who would hear the news and be invited to see the child would be royalty themselves. Not so with our Lord; the first people to hear the news were shepherds, who would have been the lowest possible class of society.

What an awesome picture! Simple people, doing their job on an ordinary night, when an angel appears; their reaction - they were terrified. But after calming them, the angel gave them the most amazing news - the Messiah has just been born. And then, in case seeing one angel was not enough, Scripture says more came - "Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people He favors." Luke 2:13-14 What an awesome message to all of us - Jesus did not come for a select group or for certain people; He came to earth to be Savior for all mankind - without regard to titles or wealth or status.

The most awesome part of this story to me is after they had seen Jesus.
"The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for they had seen and heard, just as they had been told." Luke 2:20 Their reaction to meeting Jesus was to glorify and praise God. For those of us who have met Jesus, who claim Him as our Lord and Savior, may our attitude be the same - glorifying and praising God for His mercy and love.

"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God's glory."
I Corinthians 10:31
