Ensuring continued mobility for member-engineers post-Brexit

As we approach the festive season may I, on behalf of our Council, Executive and all at 22 Clyde Road, wish you and yours a very happy Christmas and a prosperous 2019.
With the probable Brexit on 29 March 2019, it is vital that we maintain the mutual recognition of engineering professionals between Ireland and the UK. I am delighted to say that we have become one of the first organisations to sign an agreement with our counterpart in the UK to ensure ongoing recognition of qualifications between the jurisdictions. Our Director General spoke about this on RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland on 11 December (listen here) and more information is below.
Our organisation is looking for expert engineers to help in the formation of two specific panels, one for the OPW Voluntary Homeowners Relocation Scheme and the other on IS 465 Assessment of Concrete Building Materials. More information is here. I would like to sincerely thank sector members who recently completed the media spokesperson survey.
We have much to look forward to in 2019. On 9 January at 6:30pm we will inaugurate the Chartered Engineer Commemoration Year at Clyde Road and launch Dr Ron Cox’s book Called to Serve Two. Our black-tie Annual Ball takes place on 18 January in Dublin with an early bird discount on tickets (10%) until 19 December.

MEETA awards recognise excellence in maintenance and asset management
|

Engineers Ireland celebrated excellence in the fields of maintenance engineering and asset management at our annual MEETA (Maintenance, Engineering, Environment and Technology Association) awards, which took place here at our offices on Clyde Road on Thursday 29 November.
The awards recognise the ingenuity shown by those in maintenance and asset management in providing value to their companies and are an initiative of Engineers Ireland’s MEETA society, a special interest group for maintenance, reliability and asset management practitioners.
Caroline Spillane, Director General, Engineers Ireland, Laoise Ní Chonchubhair, MEETA Society and Ray O’Neill, Managing Director of the event sponsor, ESS Ltd, were present to recognise the achievements of the following category winners:
Overall Industry Award: Barry Jordan and Derek Murtagh of Bristol-Myers Squibb for their project, ‘Embedding Predictive Maintenance during the MPCC Project’ (pictured).
Health and Safety Award: Stephen O’Donnell of Allergan, for his project, ‘Allergan’s Operational Excellence (OPEX).’
Management Award: Danny O'Brien and David Butler of Gas Networks Ireland, for their project, ‘A Risk-Based Approach to the Lifecycle Management of Valves at Gas Network Ireland’s Compressor Stations in Southwest Scotland.’
Environment Award: Megan Staunton of Astellas, for her project ‘Astella’s Leading Light for Life.’
Technology Award: Emma Beglin and Charlie Nolan of Bristol-Myers Squibb for their project, ‘Augmented Reality at BMS ‘Changing the way we look at Maintenance.’

TII joins Engineers Ireland’s STEPS Programme to support engineering talent pipeline
|
|
|
|
Engineers Ireland STEPS programme is to be supported by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) over the period 2019-2021 as part of TII’s corporate commitment to encourage young people to consider a career in engineering.
STEPS is the only national full-time STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) outreach programme with a focus on engineering. The programme aims to encourage and educate future generations of engineers by supporting industry and community leaders to engage with primary and secondary school pupils through a number of hands-on workshops and programmes.
Michael Nolan, Chief Executive of TII said: “Engineers play a pivotal role at Transport Infrastructure Ireland as they enable us to develop high quality transport infrastructure and services which benefit families and communities throughout Ireland. Through our support of the Engineers Ireland STEPS programme, it is our hope that even more girls and boys will get the opportunity to explore the limitless opportunities a career in engineering offers and spark a curiosity that could potentially lead to future study and a career in the sector.”

The STEPS team is currently calling on engineering organisations, local authorities and third-level institutions nationwide get involved in Engineers Week 2019, a seven-day programme of nationwide events celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland. Taking place from 2 – 8 March 2019, Engineers Week encourages primary and post-primary students, their teachers and parents to explore the exciting world of engineering as well as highlighting the diverse career opportunities engineering offers. British and Irish Engineers tie up deal on mobility post-Brexit
Engineers Ireland is one of the first organisations to sign an agreement with our counterpart in the UK to ensure ongoing recognition of qualifications between the jurisdictions. The deal will allow ongoing mobility post-Brexit for engineers coming to the Republic and for Irish engineers going to the UK.
We have agreed the Access Pathways Agreement (APA) with the Engineering Council, the registration body for engineers in the UK, to ensure the continued recognition of Professional Titles held by registered engineers post-Brexit.
The Agreement recognises the equivalent holders of professional registered titles in both jurisdictions including Chartered Engineer (CEng); Engineering technician (EngTech) and Associate Engineer (Ireland) /Incorporated Engineers (UK). Also included are holders of the UK’s Information and Communications Technology Technicians title (ICTTech).
Peter Quinn our President said: “This Agreement aims to provide certainty to engineering professionals from both Ireland and the UK to continue to support trade, the development of critical infrastructure and economic development regardless of the outcome of Brexit.
“Mutual recognition agreements have been in place with UK professional engineering organisations (PEOs) for many years. We have built strong relationships and trust with these organisations and we are proud to continue these links. I am delighted a pathway has been negotiated and achieved with the Engineering Council in the UK on behalf of these PEOs.”

In this December’s Connect we hear about the focus of work of our Mechanical and Manufacturing Division.
Over 4,000 Engineers Ireland members have an interest in mechanical engineering and manufacturing.
The Division committee members act to ensure mechanical engineering and manufacturing flourish in Ireland. We led the publication of Engineers Ireland’s Industry 4.0 policy statement, seeking to maximise adoption of new techniques and technologies, keeping Irish Industry at the forefront of global manufacturing. Engineers Ireland President Peter Quinn is pictured above at the launch event (centre) with Conor Sheehan (above left) and Paul Dillon (above right) of the Mechanical and Manufacturing Division. There are also links with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) through the Republic of Ireland’s Regional Branch.
We provide our members with a range of CPD opportunities, developing CPD seminars, hosting lectures from high-calibre speakers and organising site visits: in 2018, we visited the Irish Manufacturing Research in Mullingar (viewing their 3d printing facilities), hosted an evening lecture on Robotics as well as visiting O Brother Brewery in Wicklow. Therefore members are provided with events for networking with peers and groups they want to engage with.
Through our industrial and academic network, the Division works to influence national policy, with associated industry groups, acting as representatives at national and international meetings and our own events.
Our next event is the visit of Tony Roche, IMechE President, on Friday 14 December; he will tour Irish Rail’s Inchicore Works, meet with Engineers Ireland’s Director General and will conclude his visit with his keynote speech to the Division and Engineers Ireland.

The Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme was voted national Engineering Project of the Year for 2018 at the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards held in association with ESB on 9 November. Twelve awards were handed out during the gala occasion at the InterContinental Hotel in Dublin. Peter Quinn our President, spoke on the night saying: “Congratulations to all who are shortlisted or nominated for awards tonight – individuals and organisations. To me you are all winners and in real terms, engineering as a profession, is the winner. We certainly appreciate you taking the time to enter the awards and support our profession. And the range of organisations represented here tonight – from local authorities to consultants and contractors; geotechnical and environmental engineers; conservation and tech specialists – highlights the diversity of the engineering profession today - and the convergence that is happening between all our engineering disciplines.”
