eManagement Tips - December 2018

A free monthly update for Associates and Members of RiverRhee's Managers' Community
Welcome to RiverRhee's Managers' version of the December 2018 issue of eManagement Tips, our monthly resource for new and experienced managers who have attended or are considering one of our management courses.

We had some very rich discussions and reflections at our latest in-house Introduction to Management course with one of our clients. Day 1 is all about building the managers' understanding of how they can engage with, support and develop the individuals within their teams.

And so, as we come to the end of another year, and prepare for 2019, this eManagement Tips' main themes include:
  • Some original ideas for building and maintaining engagement within growing and larger organisations
  • Why empathy is so important and how to develop your skills in this area
  • A reminder about what coaching is all about
For those of you based at Chesterford Research Park, we will be making our next monthly visit to The Nucleus this Thursday 13th December between 10:00 - 2:00 pm.  We do this so you can come and have a chat about anything that would be helpful to you.  So do please come and say 'hello'.

Our 2019  calendar of courses is shown at the foot of this newsletter. We are continuing to schedule courses on a demand basis.  So if the course you want is not shown, do please get in touch so that we can arrange it.

*** We wish you all the best for a restful and enjoyable break, and a healthy and productive New Year. ***

Building and maintaining engagement within growing organisations

One of the aspects we enjoy most about working with smaller Life Science or Biotech organisations is the level of energy, enthusiasm and connection that every employee seems to have with their company’s purpose.

The people we encounter tend to demonstrate a level of autonomy and independent thinking that is sadly so often lacking as organisations grow and their bureaucracy increases.

For those of you who recognise that this may be an issue in your growing or larger organisation, you might be interested in our take on Gary Hamel and Michele Zanini's article in the November-December Harvard Business Review.

Why empathy is so important and how to develop our skills in this area

There is some suggestion, at least in social media discussions, that empathy might be a bit of a management trend and, consequently, somewhat over-rated.  We disagree!

Booklet number 6 in Daniel Goleman et al's "Building Blocks of Emotional Intelligence" is all about this topic and, like us, they assert that empathy will enable us to better understand, communicate with and work with others in a more effective way.

Empathy revisited - what, why and how is a summary of the key points from Daniel Goleman and his colleagues' booklet on this topic.

Coaching... a reminder

Coaching is an invaluable component of a manager's toolkit.

It is a skill we introduce managers to in our Introduction to Management and Performance Review and Development courses.  It is also one you can develop further through practise, and through our Coaching Skills for Managers course.

As Elisabeth highlighted in her recent LinkedIn post on "who holds the pen in your one-to-one meetings", taking a coaching approach in your one-to-one discussions will:
  • Help your direct report in their development
  • Support them in taking more ownership for that development
  • Free up more of your time in the long run

Our schedule of courses for 2019
