Welcome to Issue 4 of NML Inc. 2018 E-News
Welcome to our final E-News for 2018! As the year draws to a close we reflect on all that has been achieved by our 2018 participants and NML Alumni and look towards 2019 and upcoming opportunities to provide leadership within our community.
ORGANISATIONAL UPDATE

Jenny Grigg
NML Executive Officer
"“A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others.” - Douglas McArthur

As 2018 draws to a close, I again congratulate all those who completed the Northern Mallee Leaders Program during the year; a test of courage, time management skills and most importantly dedication to carving a shared vision for our region that sees us in very good hands as you join our Alumni of 161 graduates. Well done – you did a great job!

Thank you again most sincerely to the NML staff - Paula, Nardia and Carrie who have worked so tirelessly and creatively to ensure NML Inc. realises its goal in developing future leaders across the region.
2019 is already shaping up to be a stellar program year!

Future Focus

For the future, NML Inc. seeks to continue its role as the premier leadership development organisation through expanding our pool to 100 new leaders from 2020 – 2023. To enable this goal, NML Inc. is working closely with Victorian Regional Community Leadership Programs (VRCLP) and nine-member organisations in seeking a further four years of state government funding.

In order to develop our people to support the many initiatives, projects and investment in our region, NML Inc. requires $1million of the proposed $11 million funding pool for regional community leadership sought by VRCLP.

We congratulate the new Regional Development Minister Jaclyn Symes and look forward to meeting her as soon as possible to discuss how we can work in partnership with Regional Development Victoria to realise our goal.

2019 NML Events

NML Inc. is excited about our key leadership events scheduled for 2019. We encourage you to add these to your diaries right now as must-attend professional and personal development events! (See our dates schedule in this e-news edition). We are busily contacting a number of potential guests to raise the profile of our region as a forerunner of conversation and dialogue regarding current issues impacting regional Australia. Our aim is for progressive leadership in arts, multi-culturalism and food from paddock to plate. You can purchase your tickets nearer to the event or our discounted NML Events package to be released early in the New Year via our website. We will provide you with regular updates as we confirm speakers, special guests and launch our Events Package.

May you all have a wonderful Christmas, and a happy and safe New Year as we look forward to an exciting NML program and other leadership development opportunities in 2019.

PROGRAM UPDATE

Nardia Sheriff
NML Program Manager
It’s probably odd that I find the lead-in to Christmas a great time to take stock of the year that has been. To pause amid the chaos and marvel at how quickly another year has come and gone.  2018 has been a big year!!! It has seen a new team take on the challenge of shaping the leadership potential of a new group of participants from within our community.

It has been a real privilege to have had the opportunity to give back to my own community through the development and nurturing of the 2018 graduates. To start a fresh year as strangers, coming together amongst unspoken tension and apprehension and now finishing the year with solid friendships and respect for the connections that were formed. It is a fabulous thing! As is observing the growth, confidence and willingness to step into something new and different. For me, this has been the highlight of the year and the most rewarding.

Luckily for me, I get to do it all again in 2019!

We are currently finalising our recruitment for the 2019 Program having had an overwhelming response during the application phase. We will again have an incredibly diverse group of participants, fresh and eager to hit the ground running come February next year. Planning and scheduling is madly underway as we look to tweak and refine what we do to ensure that each participant is given the best experience possible.

So, before we break for Christmas, I’d like to thank all of the speakers and facilitators that have worked with us in 2018 – I look forward to touching base with you in the New Year and garnering your support again in 2019.  Thanks to the awesome NML Inc. team who worked tirelessly this year to deliver the 2018 Program and to all the Alumni and friends of Northern Mallee Leaders who were a constant source of support as I navigated my way through this year! I look forward to the break, but I’m looking forward to seeing you all again in 2019 even more!

Finally, to the fabulous 2018 Participants, thank you for being the best group of participants to ‘cut my teeth’ so to speak, in the space of community leadership and facilitation!  I can’t wait to see where the continuation of this leadership journey takes you!

Merry Christmas!

ALUMNI NEWS

Paula Robinson
NML Alumni Manager
NML Alumni have had a successful and active year throughout our region in 2018.

The opportunities for involvement in NML Inc. related activities included: workshops; committees; program events; reunions; community projects; meeting Olympians; presenting to the current participants; mentoring; documentary screenings, a ten-year reunion for our 2008 group and so much more! In all, we have had 45% of our 141 Graduates involved in an NML Inc. event throughout the year.

The NML Alumni have also been very visible in the community with community projects such as the inaugural Great Murray River Salami Festival (led by Guy Fielding, NMLP 2017), the opening of the Mildura Airport Aeromedical Patient transfer station (facilitated by Trudy Scott, NMLP 2017) and many other community-building activities.  Other Alumni have stepped up to take on community leadership roles in a range of organisations from education to sustainability and health.

I would like to thank the members of our Alumni who took on roles as Committee members, mentors, speakers, event MC’s, photographers, and to those who supported the events or advocated for the program throughout the year.

We warmly welcome the 2018 graduates to our network.  We now have 161 skilled and enthusiastic Alumni looking to make our communities better and stronger. I look forward to continuing working with the Alumni, the new participants and the hard working NML Inc. staff as we move into 2019.
