Tri-Cities Literacy News for December

December is a Time to Celebrate  2018!!

As 2018 draws to a close, I just wanted to say a very big thank you to all our supporters and partner organizations.  A community working together can and does accomplish so much more than any one organization can. The Tri-Cities is an incredible supportive and caring community and it is a real pleasure to work in such an amazing community. Our working groups are made up of representatives from a  large variety of organizations and work together to run events in the Tri-Cities.

The Tri-Cities Literacy Committee worked hard to deliver a variety of literacy opportunities in 2018.

Here are some of the things we did:

~Participated in 7 Ready Set Learns at elementary schools
~Participated in 10 Family Play & Learn events at Coquitlam Centre which an average of 100 children attended each month
~Held a Canada Day picnic for over 400 adult English language learner students and their families
~Brought you Stories Galore and More to five parks over 6 weeks in the summer with over 1400 people attending
~Held 6 Canadian Cultural talks called the Learn About Series with over 800 people participating
~Continued to promote Little Free Libraries in the community, including working with local businesses to host book boxes in their locations to encourage families to read a book while they wait
~Continued to collaborate with a large variety of community organizations to meet our goal of literacy for all
~Participated in numerous Community Events and promoted the importance of literacy
~Brought you this monthly Literacy Newsletter

Thank you to all of you who help support the literacy needs of our community members.  Let's continue to work together in 2019 for improved literacy for all.

Little Free Libraries Celebration in PoCo

On November 18th, the City of Port Coquitlam, in conjunction with the Tri-Cities LIteracy Committee, co-hosted a Little Free Library celebration event. We took the opportunity to decorate some book boxes to place in local businesses and to thank all the stewards who attended for their hard work and dedication in promoting literacy and community engagement. Here are some of the little boxes that you might see in some local businesses - Taco del Mar, Port Coquitlam; Village Toy Shop, Port Moody and Strawberries and Sunshine, Port Coquitlam.  Please look for more in the New Year!
