Coping With Holiday Grief

December 2018 Edition

Five Stories To Help You Cope With Grief
During the Holidays

From a family facing a Holiday Season with an absent loved one to a movie star grieving for his wife some time after her death, grief touches us all. An empty seat just a few inches away can be a substantial source of pain for many this holiday season. Coping with loss is a long journey. Below are some guides to help face the road ahead. Use it for yourself or share with a friend.

Big Bend Hospice Offers Grief Support During the Holidays
Forum 2018 presenter and Caitlin Burns urges readers to plan ahead and anticipate feelings that may arise this time of year. "Would you prefer quiet time or being surrounded by friends and family? Answering these questions now may ease stress and anxiety."

Holiday Grief and Family Estrangement
The loss of a loved one might not always be the source of grief for families approaching the Holidays. "Grief for the living through family estrangement is pervasive and painful around the holidays as well.  Unfortunately, it is also often hidden from view.   Those who are estranged from their families for all kinds of reasons, often feel the shame and stigma associated with estrangement, that leaves them to suffer in silence. "

How To Help A Grieving Friend
Sometimes it's hard to know what to say to a close friend grappling with loss. "The thing is, you can’t cheer someone up by telling them to look on the bright side, or by giving them advice.... learn the one thing that will improve all of your “I’m here for you” intentions, and be that supportive friend you most want to be.
