Hui E! The Year In Review
Ngā mihi o Hine Raumati from the Hui E! whānau

Kua oti…another jam packed year has come to an end and we feel fortunate to have been able to work with many of you from within the community and across the many sectors to ensure a community voice is heard. We were set up to connect, strengthen and support the wider community sector in three ways: Kōrero, Hui and Āwhina. Your support has been valuable to promote the sector, share what’s happening, explore opportunities and connect across sectors. Here are some examples of what we achieved together this year: 

  • First cross-sectoral Summit on the ‘2030 Agenda’, with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at its heart, in April. This included a pre-summit workshop for civil society and the release of a discussion paper on the community sector and the SDGs.
  • Supported the development of the third Open Government Partnership National Action Plan for New Zealand, which includes 12 commitments to make government more open, accountable, and responsive
  • Supported wider community input into a fairer tax system, and measures for wellbeing (Indicators Aotearoa).
  • We met many of you at our regular meetings in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch throughout the year, and we also engaged with regional and international partners to represent the wider community sector voice. 

He mihi…thank you for the work you do for the people in your communities and the wider community and voluntary sector. We also want to thank our intern Teri Flint, who was with us in April/May this year, our Pou Āwhina Viola Lombard and her contributions in the health and age care sectors, and Pou Āwhina Gaurav Dhar our IT guru who will provide insights and advice from time to time that can benefit the wider community. 

Hei tērā tau…in the New Year, we look forward to engaging with you on the Charities Act Review in March and April; a People’s Report on the SDGs; the second SDG Summit in Auckland on 2 September; and much much more.

Heoi anō…but until then, from the Hui E! whānau, for those heading into a well-deserved break we wish you a safe and happy summer season. For those of us still focused on our communities and don’t have the luxury of taking some time off – kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui! Stand strong with a clear focus and open heart!

Our Year in Pictures
As part of our work with ACC, we attended the Concussion – A Changing Culture 2018 Conference last month (l), which confirmed many of the challenges we are facing when it comes to diagnosing and treating concussion in NZ. In their latest Newsletter, ACC details the roles of their Customer Advisory Programme Panel Members (of which Hui E! is one) looking ahead. Hui E! is now also part of the stakeholder group for the 2nd Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals to be held in Sept 2019 (r), following our involvement during the first Summit earlier this year. 
Our Hui E! Annual General Meeting was held on 5 November and we thank Hon Peeni Henare and his support team for kick starting an engaging discussion and providing a poignant catalyst for the collaborative speakers that followed. 
This important piece of work developing wellbeing measures for NZ saw us spending quite a bit of time with the team at Stats NZ and community organisations up and down the country. A list of indicators is now available following Stats NZ's work and represents a snapshot of where they are at – it remains subject to further review and (national/international) peer review and we will keep you informed. 
Ahead of New Zealand's first Voluntary National Review of its progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, Hui E! attended the Sub-regional preparatory meeting for the 6th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development. 
Our Pou Āwhina Viola has been providing valuable input into the age care sector, particularly her experience working with people with dementia. Here she attended the Age Concern Conference (l) and spoke at the Alzheimer's NZ 2018 Conference (r). 
The Open Government Partnership (OGP) team at State Services Commission held meetings around the country towards the 3rd National Action Plan. Hui E! is a member of the Expert Advisory Panel (EAP) for the OGP and we’ve been able to contribute to discussions towards ensuring the voice of the community is considered.
Earlier this year, we attended the 2nd Symposium on Agroecology and the 34th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for the Asia and the Pacific. The first was an interesting combination of views from civil society, states and the private sector on how technology, innovation and traditional knowledge  systems regarding agriculture practices can be better utilised and scaled up towards progressing the 2030 agenda. The second discussed different issues regarding food security in the Pacific. 
We also attended the Youth Peer Exchange with the CIVICUS Youth Working Group on youth engagement in civil society. 
Hui E! supported the first SDG Summit held in April this year. It provided a good opportunity for the community sector to kick into gear to take up the challenge of working across sectors with our government and private sector counterparts. 
In March, we hosted the launch of the Independent Reporting Mechanism (IRM) Progress Report on NZ's second national action plan, as part of our ongoing support for the Open Government Partnership (l). 
And as one of our supporters, we have worked closely with Multicultural New Zealand throughout the year. 

We are closed over the summer break and back from the 7th January.
