Broc Vs. Cruse, Round 1...

This afternoon's tasting is a California natural wine showdown. Broc Cellars has been a staple in the shop for years, and Chris' wines have taken up more shelf space than any other single producer - domestic or imported - for most of that time.

A few months ago Cruse Wine Co. arrived on the scene, helping us to achieve a California natural wine selection that's more exciting & dynamic than ever.

In 2016 the SF Chronicle named Michael Cruse Winemaker of the Year, lauding the Bay Area Native for "reimagining what 'table wine' can be: fruity, quaffable, affordable" and for producing such a style that remains "intensely loyal to its California origins."

This week we received another drop from Cruse and today we're popping a bottle of the Valdiguié Nouveau.

Styled after the annual celebratory bottling in Beaujolais (and it's appropriate that Michael used valdiguié for his Nouveau, considering that the valdiguié vines in California were mistaken as gamay for years), the wine is bottled directly after fermentation, without aging.

Next to the happy glugger we're opening Broc Valdiguié, a vibrant articulation whose savory touch expresses old-world edge. We're not exactly pitting the winemakers against each other... unless you want to think of it that way... but it should be interesting to see how the Nouveau stands up to the senior.

To read more about Michael Cruse, check out the December 2016 article from the SF Chronicle.
