Welcome to Bio-Link Community News December 2018
I apologize for resending this. In the earlier version, I forgot to add information that Dr. Daiyuan Zhang sent me about the Del Mar College students presenting at their local ASM conference. You'll find it below.
November was a busy time for the Bio-Link community! Bio-Link members attended the NIH Community College Day in Maryland, the NABT conference in San Diego, and a local ASM conference in Corpus Christi, Texas. The NABT conference provided a good opportunity to meet and talk to many of you about careers in biotechnology and getting connected to the Bio-Link community.
We're fortunate this month to have community members Dr. Amrita Madabushi from Baltimore Community College and Dr. Daiyuan ("Daisy") Zhang (Del Mar College) sharing reports from the NIH Community College Day and the Texas ASM conference. You'll see those below.
We would love to hear what you're doing and about conferences or events you or your students attend. Drop me a line (sandy@bio-link.org).

Des Moines Area Community College Biotechnology program graduate Lyndsay Baker has accomplished one of her dreams. She designed an algae experiment that will be conducted on the International Space Station. Lyndsay hopes her algae will produce astaxanthin that can be used to keep astronauts healthy.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) held the 10th Community College (CC) Day November 19, 2018. Both faculty and students from Maryland and Virginia Community Colleges enjoyed this excellent opportunity to visit the NIH campus and learn about careers and training opportunities in Biomedical and Health care fields.

Students from Del Mar College, part of the AC2 Bio-Link Regional ATE Center, presented posters and walked away with prizes at the 2018 Texas ASM Fall meeting, Nov. 8-10th, in Corpus Christi, TX. It should be noted, they were also the only community college students attending the conference. As a community, this is a situation, we'd like to see change. Del Mar faculty and others have found that undergraduate research opportunities can be a useful tool for recruiting students to enroll in biotech programs.
Are you interested in learning how other instructors teach bioinformatics?
The AC2 Bio-Link Regional Center is offering an online course for would-be bioinformatics instructors through Austin Community College. Participants meet in weekly video chats, review student work, and walk through student assignments. ACC's Bioinformatics class covers using databases, working with molecular structures, analyzing DNA, RNA, and protein sequences, and identifying genetic variation.
Last August, Bio-Link members participated in a special biotechnology strand at the ASM Conference on Undergraduate Education. ASMCUE 2019 will be held August 1-4 in Tysons, Virginia. We would love to have you come and represent the Bio-Link community.
The CDC Science Ambassador Fellowship is a dynamic, educational program offered by CDC for teachers and educational leaders interested in bringing public health sciences into middle- and high-school classrooms. This competitive fellowship includes a 5-day interactive summer course at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and a 1-year distance-based professional development opportunity.

This month we spotlight the Bio-Link Biotech Instruction page. Maybe 2019 is the year you are finally going to teach that Biotech class! Or maybe you have already been teaching for a number of years and are looking to add to your established plan. Take a look here as you prepare your ideas to see what your colleagues have already accomplished and shared. From Course in a Box to biotechnology Skill Standards, there is something for everyone!
