<<First Name>>,

It's been quite a year.

With the end of the year quickly approaching, we reflect on 2018. In short, we have had a year full of new faculty, new programs, and new, exciting things on the horizon for the UCF School of Public Administration.

We welcomed two new faculty members to support our urban and regional planning and emergency management programs. Speaking of urban & regional planning, our M.S. in Urban & Regional Planning was accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board. Because of this accreditation, the American Planning Association Orlando Metro Section established the Judith Mucci Endowed Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance to students completing the program.

This was not our only program to receive accreditation this year, as our Master in Nonprofit Management program became the first standalone nonprofit management program in the world to be accredited by NASPAA.

We welcomed two new programs to our School:
  • B.S./B.A. in Emergency Management and Homeland Security
  • Master of Emergency and Crisis Management
According to U.S. News and World Report, our programs are now ranked in six different categories. This includes the #6 ranking for homeland/national security and emergency management and the Master in Nonprofit Management ranking at #12 for best nonprofit management programs, five spots higher than the previous year. For the first time, SPA was ranked on the list of best public finance and budgeting programs and public management and leadership programs.

We released our annual premier publication Focus to rave reviews and introduced Impact on Civil Society to specifically highlight the work of our nonprofit programs and Center for Public and Nonprofit Management with local and national communities.

Our Center for Public and Nonprofit Management is celebrating its tenth anniversary. The Center has provided support for our faculty to conduct research significantly impacting the various public service fields, provided support to our local nonprofit organizations through capacity building seminars in conjunction with a grant from the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, and hosts the annual Public Administration Research Conference, which brings together students and faculty across the world to engage in important discussions about the advancement and development of the public administration field. The 13th annual Public Administration Research Conference will be held on March 1, 2019.

The School of Public Administration will be one of the first units to be welcomed to UCF Downtown, opening fall 2019. Our School was restructured under the College of Community Innovation and Education, directly aligning with our mission to educate and serve current and future public service professionals. The transition to downtown Orlando will provide more opportunities for our students to engage with our exceptional alumni and community partners.

As we prepare to welcome our new graduates to the SPA alumni family after this week’s commencement and move into 2019, I look forward to the continuation of the remarkable strides that we have made this year.

Best wishes to you and your family during this beautiful holiday season!

Naim Kapucu
Director, UCF School of Public Administration

P.S. Of course, we would be remiss if we did not mention the remarkable season our UCF football team had - another undefeated season! We look forward to cheering them on at the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day!
