New Mexico AD Nunez comments on the exit & buyout of Deputy AD Hutchins, "The reality is, now's the time I've got to starting putting other pieces together & this is just one of those steps. [...] We understand the financial situation that we are in, but it’s a matter of us trying to continue to move this program in the direction that I came in here with to make this place better." KRQE's Tate says he traded text messages with Hutchins, who agreed with Nunez's rationale. (link)
Boston College MBB didn't make it to College Station on Friday for a tip yesterday against Texas A&M due to its pilot being too worried about landing amid record-setting rainfall. The Eagles were uncomfortable traveling yesterday morning & playing on the same day or moving to the game Sunday. Aggies HC Kennedy uses the words "perplexed" & "disappointed," BC AD Jarmond says it's all about the safety of student-athletes, "Under no circumstances will we put student-athletes in harm's way." Full refunds for ticket holders (link)
New ECU AD Gilbert points to the common thread of Lenoir-Rhyne (DII) between he & new Pirates FB HC Houston. Gilbert did his undergrad & played FB at L-R & Houston got his first shot as a HC for the Bears. Gilbert: "Without overstating it, I do think the Lenoir-Rhyne connection really did play a part in this. The familiarity level with one another (between Hart, Gilbert and Houston) and the comfort level, all of that really played a part as well." ECU BoT chair Shanahan on Gilbert's charge, "East Carolina has done a great job in its earlier conferences by doing a lot with very little and has really run an 18-wheeler on a Volkswagen engine, but we can’t do that any longer at East Carolina. We need to make the financial commitments so that when we bring a new coach in here and we say that we are going to get a new practice field and have the best equipment and a training table and look forward to one day having an indoor practice facility, we have to be able to deliver on those promises. Like (baseball) coach Cliff Godwin, we have to keep great coaches. We want to lay the foundation for long-term success." (link)
What many believe Amazon will do here in the States if it gobbles up more sports content rights (Prime signups > viewer data > more targeted sales), Chinese billionaire & Alibaba founder Ma is trying to do in China. Ma's Alisports is buying broadcast rights to marathons as a sort of 'Moneyball' experiment. Alisports CEO Dazhong: "We are a platform that records big data on sports. Viewers watching sports on our sites now are directly connected with the e-commerce stores, something that couldn’t happen in the past." Mobile consumption is part of the story...check out this stat, "About 600 million people in China watched videos online as of June, roughly 95 percent of them via mobile devices." (link)

Purdue AD Bobinski chatted with the Journal & Courier about plans for Ross-Ade Stadium, which now extend beyond just the south end zone. The results of a market study about premium seating and other opportunities will be sent to Populous to help get the ball rolling. Bobinski: "The big question is cost and raising the money to do it. We don’t have a lot of debt capacity at this point and time. We’re going to need to raise significant money, we’re going to need support from those who can to help us get there and we’re going to be out making that ask here as soon as we have a well-defined plan that we believe will be compelling. ... How do we make that stadium the most effective, competitive environment, fan experience, etc., etc. but also the best revenue generating venue it can be given the footprint that we have? It’s never going to be 100,000 seats. You have to have a different model. You go at it differently." Says a ticket price increase for next year is "fair." (link)
It's Personnel: Certainly looks like former Utah State HC Andersen, who returned to the Aggies as an AC this past season, will get the top job in Logan again. (link); Rutgers AD Hobbs goes with Fordham's McElderry as the next Men's Soccer HC in Piscataway. (link); Florida A&M Prez Robinson awarded a 9% pay raise, taking his salary from $385K to $419,650. Also earned a $57,750 bonus. (link)
Checking in with Brenda Tracy: "I remember when fans from MANY schools were calling for the death penalty @ Baylor, but now they wanna hire their coaches. Yeah, um... ok. [...] The NCAA has also charged Baylor with 'lack of institutional control' and has yet to hand down sanctions. So save me the 'what did Kendal do wrong?; NO ONE from that staff should be coaching anywhere." (link, link)
Populous is helping UT Chattanooga with its Wolford Family Athletics Center plans, though it is still to be determined where the facility will be located. The options are attached to McKenzie Arena or at the site currently occupied by Engel Stadium. Populous will also assist with a master plan that includes renovations to McKenzie and Maclellan Gymnasium. Mocs AD Wharton: "We rent everything and own very little, and we're looking at how we can bring this all in to where we have a home for all our teams. ... We're trying to solve problems to control our own destiny in a lot of ways, and when that report comes back, we'll sit down and put a road map together. I would be shocked if we didn't move dirt by August, and I'm really thinking July. Most projects are 18 months. The chancellor is more antsy than I am, and I'm pretty antsy. We've got the resources. We just want to do what's right for the long term at UTC, because this won't just transform football but our total athletic program." (link)
VCU AD McLaughlin on the MBB series with Virginia as the two teams are set to meet for the 15th time ever today: "I think we’d both like to play again. I think it makes a lot of sense for the state. I think it makes a lot of sense for both our programs." UVA HC Bennett thinks it is "good for the state" to have the in-state rivalries and the Cavaliers play William & Mary later this month, too. (link); How about this proposed four-year Big Ten FB schedule if there were no divisions & "everyone played everyone." (link)
Also Noticed: Check out the scene from GameDay yesterday at the Army vs. Navy game. (link); Here's some pics of the new academic center at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. (link); In case you missed it yesterday, here is the NET vs RPI rankings in a side-by-side comparison. This might be a better link for some of you, as well. (link); Old Hat Creative's Logsdon has a new book out, 'Winning Is Not A Strategy,' includes excerpts from the likes of Loyola Marymount AD Pintens, Texas & Mississippi State senior leaders Martin & Beasley. (link); USF MBB will not travel to Charlotte for the previously scheduled Sunday afternoon tip with the 49ers due to the winter weather storm in the area. Rescheduling is being discussed. (link); Former Louisville MBB great Bridgeman's exclusive negotiating window to buy Sports Illustrated has lapsed and another bidder is believed to have surfaced. Bridgeman notes he wasn't sure why it was reported that he was in the final stages, as there was nothing new on his end. (link, link); Idaho FB student-athlete Curington arrested on rape charges yesterday. He has been suspended from the team indefinitely. (link)
