Headline of the week

What. A. Headline.
All I Want For Christmas is...

The holidays are right around the corner, and whether you celebrate Omisoka, Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Lucia, Hanukkah, Christmas Day, Yule or Saturnalia, we can ALL agree that this GIF of a baby with a gift is just great. This week, I decided to put together a list of lists, curating the best gift guides from around the web, just in case you've been too busy to shop and/or waited until the last minute, as always. WHO'S EXCITED?

But first, a little bit of gift philosophy. There’s an art and a science to giving great gifts, again and again. Here are 5 ways to get it right, every year:

1) Just bloody give them what they ask for.
2) The most luxurious gift is one that no one needs.
3) Give the gift of quality time, instead of more stuff.
4) There’s no gift like helping someone love themselves.
5) A homemade gift should be personal, yet practical.
DIY Gifts
Broke? Me too! But it shouldn't stop you from making something nice. It wont be as good as this $316,007.83 Solid Gold Bicycle, but it's the thought that counts, right? RIGHT? The Pourquoi Pas' favourite: Homemade Limoncello. Because alcohol is our friend.

Tech Gifts
Big Tech may have killed democracy and privacy, but at least it gave us some wicked toys in the process. The Pourquoi Pas' favourite: Big Mouth Billy Bass – Compatible with Alexa. Not only is the future terrifying, we will also look utterly ridiculous when alien species discover the charred remains of Earth.

Home, Food and Drinks Gifts
If you're a mature adult and a functioning member of society (boooooh), it is possible that to you, gift-giving is just a way to improve someone's home life.
The Pourquoi Pas' favourite: Pickering's Baubles Bottling Note. You may be ready to be an adult, but I'm not.
Neeeeerd Gifts
In 2018, it's cool to be a nerd and/or a geek. And that's awesome. The gifts below can fit all ages, sizes, genders, and budgets. The Pourquoi Pas' favourite: The Adventure Zone. It's both gorgeous and hilarious.

Kids Gifts
For those blessed with kids (and hence with cursed wallets), the winter holidays are magical. Why not make it better with some un-orthodox gifts?  The Pourquoi Pas' favourite: The Atlas Obscura Explorer’s Guide for the World’s Most Adventurous Kid. I love Atlas Obscura, and this book reflects there ethos perfectly.

Media Gifts
This is the easy part of gift-giving: find the best book/movie/film of the year, and gift it. Job well done, pop the champagne.

From NPR: Best Albums of 2018
From The NYT: The 10 Best Books of 2018
From The New Yorker: The best Movies of 2018

The Pourquoi Pas' favourite: Isle Of Dogs. Good dogs.
