Te Kāhui Rangatahi o Te Atiawa Wānanga 2018 at Owae Marae

Te Kāhui Rangatahi o Te Atiawa recently held a Rangatahi wānanga at Owae Marae and the turnout was excellent with whanaunga coming from as far south as the Kāpiti Coast to attend.

The wānanga covered kaupapa such as Te Atiawa history, learning waiata and whakapapa connections with opportunities for the rangatahi to ask facilitators questions and have discussions on many kaupapa as well as being able to mix and mingle and get to know one another.

Sean Zeiltjes from Project Mounga along with a team from the Department of Conservation talked to the rangatahi about conservation projects happening on the maunga. The team also gave a presentation on how to build pest traps, then helped rangatahi build the T-Rex traps for rats, and the DOC 200 traps for rats, stoats and hedgehogs. The wānanga coincided with the Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa AGM which was a great opportunity for rangatahi who had never attended an AGM before see what takes place at the annual hui.

Below are some images from the Rangatahi wānanga. More wānanga are planned for 2019 so stay tuned!

Relationship agreement signed with
Victoria University

Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa Trust signed an official relationship agreement yesterday with Victoria University.

Victoria University has embarked on an extensive relationship building programme called "Taihonoa" which aims to connect the university with Māori entities and organisations such as Rūnanga, land incorporations and Trusts, offering a range of scholarship programmes exploring exciting research, internship, and professional development opportunities. Launched in 2016, Taihonoa has reached a milestone of 50 formalised relationships with iwi and other Māori organisations.

The signing ceremony was hosted at Te Herenga Waka Marae at Victoria University of Wellington where around 15 new iwi entities from across Aotearoa signed agreements.

Taranaki Mounga was well represented with members of Te Rūnanga Ngati Mutunga Trust, Te Kāhui o Taranaki Iwi Trust and Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Trust also signing at the ceremony.

Waitara Lands Bill An Opportunity To Establish a positive foundation for the future

The New Plymouth District Council (Waitara Lands) Bill has passed its Third Reading in Parliament today providing Waitara hapū Manukōrihi and Otaraua an opportunity to build a positive foundation for the future.

The Bill provides for the return of some land to hapū, the establishment of a joint committee with the New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) and the establishment of a joint committee with the Taranaki Regional Council (TRC). Both of these committees will have a role in determining the application of the proceeds from the Waitara leasehold land for the benefit of Waitara (the NPDC committee) and for the benefit of the Waitara River (TRC Committee).

"What will come from this legislation is an important opportunity to establish a positive foundation to build on for the future of our hapū and the people of Waitara. It marks a massive and momentous milestone in a very long journey so far," says Chairperson for Manukōrihi Hapū Patsy Bodger.

Ms Bodger acknowledges the history of the Waitara Lands and the impact that it has had on the hapū.

"Our people have endured so much since 1860. The taking of the land and the negative impact it has had on Manukōrihi hapū as a result has been huge. Waitara is our home, our tūrangawaewae, and confiscation took that from us. It has left a negative mark on generations of Manukōrihi uri, but we are serious in our endeavours towards looking to the future, we hope that through the opportunities that will come from the passing of this bill into law, we can continue to heal some of the pain that has been felt over the generations”.
