Dear friends,

Our big news this time around is the ever-widening array of U Family courses on offer just around the corner in the new year. U Family programming is meant to inspire, create, and provide meaningful experiences that help adults be their best selves. We feel that there is a direct correlation to being our best adult selves and children being their best selves. In fact, that is how we explain “Ubuntu” to children—when you are your best it helps me be my best, and when we are our best, it helps others be their best. Breathwork, for example, provides a unique opportunity for the adults in children’s lives to relax the conscious mind and let the endorphins flow...so let's start from there:

Breathwork

Breathwork is an active form of breath-focused meditation. This practice facilitates the release of “stuck” emotions. It is a powerful, energetic practice that can help you clear out what is no longer serving you; to create space inside of you to fill with more peace, joy, and authentic expressions of self. Breathwork encourages healing, growth and transformation of body, mind, and spirit. Additional information, including FAQ’s, can be found at christine-oconnor.com.
Breathwork sessions will be held in the U School gym on the fourth Sunday of every month from 10-11:30 am. Details and preregistration are on our website, and drop-ins are welcome. Upcoming sessions:

February 24
March 24
April 28

Lexicon Circles

The U School Lexicon is a reference tool which lays out the language used by educators at the U School with children and with each other. We have found that when our whole community (teachers, parents, children, and other caregivers) build greater understanding of and consistent use of the lexicon that this language tool becomes especially powerful. With this in mind, many parents have asked how can they learn more about the lexicon and how teachers use it at the U School. Additionally there has been ongoing interest in establishing U Family parenting circles. It has been something that our co-founder and director, Ryan, has been wanting to put together for quite some time. Now here it is….U Family – Lexicon Circles!

What is a Lexicon Circle?
A gathering (facilitated by Ryan) of family members, educators, and caregivers to discuss the full range of joys, trials, successes, and challenges we face in cultivating inspiring environments and experiences for children. Critically, these meetings will emphasize the lexicon as a platform for productive discourse at your child’s level.

Each Lexicon Circle will be themed with one of the five main sections of the U School Lexicon – Ubuntu, Powers, Awareness, Choice, and Fun (The PEACE Plan).
Lexicon Circles will be every other month on a Thursday evening, 6:30-8:30 pm. Once again, details and preregistration are on our website, and drop-ins are welcome. The first cycle of sessions:

Ubuntu – January 31, 2019
Powers – March 28
Awareness – May 23
Choice – July 18
Fun (The PEACE Plan) – September 19

Mindful Parents & Educators

Here are four qualities which a compassionate parent or educator attempts to embody in the presence of children:
  1. Being observant
  2. Being patient
  3. Being calm
  4. Being positive (ie, radiating warmth)
We all exhibit these qualities quite nicely at some times, and—let's be honest—not others. What if it turned out that all four were trainable? What if you could learn to access, practice, and deepen them, by choosing precisely how to pay attention in your children's presence?

If you've never meditated, you will come away from these eight sessions with a rigorous and comprehensive system for training and understanding your awareness. You'll know how to work smarter, not harder. And if you already have a meditation practice in your life, you'll find yourself recharged with a whole set of new perspectives.

Wednesday evening MP&E sessions (6:30-8:00) at the U School have been going strong for three years now. If you haven't taken the intro yet, a new year is surely an appropriate time to get started.
