Title: Light in the Darkness

Date: Monday, December 10, 2018

Focus: John 8:12

Jesus spoke to [the people], saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Consider: This season of the year is marked by Christmas lights. We push back on the diminishing daylight by putting lights on trees, decorations in yards, and candles in windows. Likewise the season of Advent is marked by four simple candles; one is lit each week until Christmas Day. These four candles, traditionally purple, symbolize the coming light of Jesus Christ into the darkness of the world.

The light of Christ illuminates our lives. What does it disclose in your life, in the recesses of your heart? Like a candle in a dark room, the gospel light brightens those dark places in each of us.

Challenge:

    1. Light a candle.

    2. Read 1 John 1:5–10

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

3. Invite the Lord to illuminate your heart.

4. Confess your sin and ask for forgiveness

5. Conclude with this historic prayer of thanksgiving for Advent:

Blessed are you, Sovereign God of all, to you be praise and glory for ever. In your tender compassion the dawn from on high is breaking upon us to dispel the lingering shadows of night. As we look for your coming among us this day, open our eyes to behold your presence and strengthen our hands to do your will, that the world may rejoice and give you praise. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. (from Common Worship: Daily Prayer, p. 198)
