News from Around the Region

SW Synchro Coach is awarded the BBC's Unsung Hero Award 2018

Dedicated synchronised swimming coach Clair Murphy has been crowned BBC West’s Unsung Hero for 2018.

Community midwife Clair, who has coached hundreds of youngsters at Calne Alpha Synchronised Swimming Club, in Wiltshire, over the last 25 years, was invited to attend the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards in Birmingham which was on Sunday 16 December.

Mum of four Clair said she was shocked to find out she had been nominated for the regional award – and even more surprised when told she had won.

“I was stunned when I got the phone call asking me to make a short film about my nomination,” said Clair.

“So you can imagine at the end of a day of filming, I was simply ready to end the film with a ‘goodbye’ from the club. But it was then they sprung it on me that I had actually won the award.

“When they gave me the award I was stunned – very happily stunned.

“The club went mad as they all thought as I did that I was just on shortlist! There was a lot of laughter and congratulations and I still get a little emotional when I think of it.

“I was very touched that I was nominated and very honoured to have won the award.”

Para Success from the Boys at Durrington Otters

The Durrington Otters Para boys have been at it again, this time at the Senior National Para Championships held recently in Manchester.
The boys had 11 swims and came away with 1 x 4th place, 4 bronze medals and 5 silver medals which was a great achievement for them.
Coach Andy Harley attended the meet with the swimmers and this was his last official engagement as Coach for Durrington Otters.
Ethan Dent made his debut within the Para World competing for the first time having only competed in introduction galas with CP sport.
It was a brilliant day for all involved, there were some personal best times and a medal haul to represent the commitment from the swimmers. 9 medals from 11 swims and a missed medal from one swimmer who was unfortunately disqualified due to being a bit too eager and moved before the starting signal!

SW Snapshot: Swim England Coaching and Teaching Register

Swim England is launching a Coaching and Teaching Register in 2019 that will bring benefits to clubs, coaches, teachers and participants.

From January to March 2019 all clubs will be required to provide basic information on all active coaches and teachers, regardless of qualification or discipline for inclusion on a new Swim England Coaching and Teaching Register.  This includes paid and voluntary coaches and teachers.

As a membership organisation, we are eager to strengthen our relationships with those delivering within clubs.   The Register will be a platform to provide better communication and support to coaches and teachers, and help us, as the Governing Body, to demonstrate best practice in terms of recording and providing quality assurances on the delivery of our sport.  It will also give clubs a central database to record their delivery workforce and ensure that their qualifications and training are in order and up-to-date.

There will be two stages in the roll out of the register.  During the first stage, which runs until the end of March 2019, clubs will need to let us know who their coaches and teachers are.   A new ‘Coaching and Teaching’ tab has been developed within the Online Membership System (OMS) which will provide a simple way for clubs to identify and create a list of their teachers and coaches.

During the second stage we will ask coaches and teachers to verify information we hold on their qualifications, DBS and safeguarding training.  At this point it may require them to supply further documentation if required.

Jane Nickerson, Swim England Chief Executive Officer said: “We know our dedicated and hardworking coaches and teachers do an amazing job across the country and as the governing body we want to support them with improved services and enhanced learning support.  The Register will also allow us to take ownership of providing quality assurance for our own workforce”.
