What a thrilling and productive first year we have had at the UCL Institute for Innovation Public Purpose (IIPP). One of IIPP’s founding principles is to link our high-quality research to the content and methods of engaging with policy-makers as well as with the broader public.
2018 was just the beginning for IIPP's mission-oriented policies: here we take a brief look at the three big moments for missions so far. For missions to drive innovation and solutions to our most “wicked” challenges requires a new mindset and organisational capacity. It also requires new economic thinking: our work on public value and public purpose provides an analytical framework for the practice of mission setting, and Josh Ryan-Collins, IIPP’s Head of Research, provides a review of our purpose-driven research in the last 12 months here.
Indeed, our goal is to train the next generation of civil servants so next year IIPP begins its education programmes: in January we will launch our Rethinking Capitalism course that will provide new economic thinking from a world-class line-up of lecturers; and our new Master of Public Administration (MPA) in Innovation, Public Policy and Public Value begins in September 2019 focusing on the dynamic capabilities required by public purpose-driven organisations to be strategic and mission-oriented.
Last week I was in Australia where I delivered the John Menadue Oration in Sydney on the topic “Can the state deliver?" to an audience of 700 people eager to hear about the type of work we are leading at IIPP—a fantastic event and broader tour of the country made possible thanks to the Centre for Policy Development.
As always, below you'll find links to our recent news, research and events.
