AHRQ Launches New Online Resource To Help
Primary Care Practices Implement Evidence
Tools for Change, a new resource from AHRQ’s EvidenceNOW project, is designed to help primary care practices and practice facilitators search among 100 tools and resources to increase their use of evidence and improve patient care. A quality improvement framework—the EvidenceNOW Key Driver Diagram—helps users to target change strategies such as selecting and customizing the best evidence, creating and supporting high functioning teams, and engaging patients and families in evidence-based care. Tools for Change is an outgrowth of EvidenceNOW, an initiative launched in 2015 that used practice facilitators to work with more than 1,500 small- and medium-sized primary care practices nationwide to improve heart health.

CDC: Cases of Tick-Borne Illnesses Continue to Rise
Health departments reported a record number of tick-borne disease cases in 2017, according to a November 9, 2018, release from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC received 59,349 reports of tick-borne disease in 2017, a significant increase from the 48,610 cases reported in 2016. The most frequently reported tick-borne disease continues to be Lyme disease (42,743 cases in 2017). Other tick-borne diseases that have seen an increase in frequency include anaplasmosis/ehrlichiosis (7,718 cases in 2017); spotted fever rickettsiosis (6,248 cases); and babesiosis (2,368 cases). It is unclear why diseases from tick bites are increasing, CDC said, but factors such as increased rainfall and changing temperature might have affected the number of ticks. In May 2018, CDC noted that cases of disease spread by bites of ticks, mosquitos, and fleas have tripled since 2004. Local health departments are not fully prepared to meet the increased threats, CDC said.

Medicare Virtual Check-in Payment Effective in 2019
Learn about an update to Medicare reimbursements that takes effect on January 1, 2019. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) will be able to receive payment for a “virtual check-in” with a Medicare patient when at least five minutes of communication technology-based (audio only or audio with video) or remote evaluation services are furnished by an FQHC practitioner to a Medicare patient who has had an FQHC-billable visit within the previous year (an established patient). The encounter must also meet these requirements:
  • The medical discussion or remote evaluation is for a condition not related to an FQHC service provided within the previous 7 days, and
  • The medical discussion or remote evaluation does not lead to an FQHC visit within the next 24 hours or at the soonest available appointment.
