Aquarium Drunkard: Sidecar/December 10, 2018

Happy Monday and welcome to Aquarium Drunkard's weekly dispatch of audio esoterica, interviews, mixtapes, and cultural ephemera pulled from all over that great big world wide web. As always, we're presented by Gold Diggers boutique hotel, bar, and recording studios in East Hollywood, Calif.

A Christmas Gift For You...From Phil Spector
There's not much we can all agree upon, but as insomuch as those things exist at all, there's Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift For You. As suited to the season as hot chocolate and colorful wrapping paper, the record has become a holiday standard, a work of remarkable joy from an utterly unlikely source. Over at the all-new, redesigned Aquarium Drunkard, Joe Crosby ponders its significance and lasting appeal.

J. Tillman: Tillman Sings 'Tonight's The Night'
Before he was Father John Misty. In 2010, Josh Tillman took on Neil Young's dark night of the soul in its entirety.

Bandcamping: Winter 2018
The fourth installment of our quarterly Bandcamp roundup. As a digital institution, it’s hard to beat Bandcamp. It’s ridiculously easy to use, it puts money directly into artists’ (and labels’) pockets and there’s a seemingly endless amount of music to discover there. Of course, that endlessness can be a little overwhelming. Here are 10 more recommended releases – old, new and in-between.

Maki Asakawa: Gogo 午後
Night music. Japanese chanteuse and composer Maki Asakawa’s career spanned three decades, experimenting with the forms of jazz, folk, blues, and pop. And while adept at all of the aforementioned, the artist was at her most interesting when she worked her own hybrid of sound. And in the case of standards, she often elevated the original material to new heights in mood, tone, and texture.

Rolling Stones in 1969: Beyond Baroque
Angelenos: Thursday, December 13, at Beyond Baroque in Venice, noted author, music historian, and friend of Aquarium Drunkard Pat Thomas will host a live Q&A discussion with Ronnie Schneider, manager of the Rolling Stones’ mythic 1969 tour — documented the classic film Gimme Shelter—about his new book Out Of Our Heads: Rolling Stones, Beatles and Me. Schneider’s career dispenses with the “Beatles or Stones” binary; he worked extensively with both. He was there at Altamont, and there with his uncle, Allen Klein, as the Beatles dissolved with Let It Be. Packed with backstage photos and personal notes, the book ought to inspire a fascinating discussion.

Doug Paisley's Winter Melancholy
Over at The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich pens some beautiful words about Doug Paisley's Starter Home: "Paisley’s new songs revel in tough accountings: mistakes, regrets, wrong turns, the eerie quiet that sets in when you’ve had enough time to think all your choices through."

Neil Young: Songs for Judy
Even if bootleg hunters already know this stuff backward and forward, Songs For Judy is an essential addition to the official canon. It captures Young in brilliantly loose form, rambling but righteous, a fine companion to Neil’s other recent solo acoustic ’76 vault release, Hitchhiker. An artist at his peak. Or at least one of his peaks, anyway.

Mythic Sunship: Land Between Rivers
From 2017, a slab of heavy, fuzzed out, guitar psychedelia and kosmische musik.

Lagniappe Session: Skyway Man
Last year, Skyway Man doubled down on his cosmic leanings with "Seen Comin’ from A Mighty Eye." Now his Skyness is back for a Lagniappe, four cuts of
extraterrestrial country, including songs originally performed by Big Kitty, the Faces, and Eliot Eidelman. Dim the lights, crack a beverage, light your preferred smoke & listen.
