MWM: What Were You Doing This Time Last Year?

Question of the Month:
What Were You Doing This Time Last Year……?
I help my 2 year old daughter find the right number day on her Gruffalo advent calendar: no 8. I get the edge of it to poke up, ready for her to lift. She scrunches forwards, using her whole body to perform a tiny movement of her fingers. Inside she finds a squirrel in the snow. Meanwhile I am more struck by the words on the inside of the folding out bit of card that accompany the snowy image: “17 days to go” I read out loud. To my daughter the number is a game. My son, aged 6, understands it and thinks it is a loooooong time to wait. I think of all the things I have to do between now and then and it seems crazily short. It strikes me as one of the biggest changes, from childhood into adulthood – our relationship to time, our experience of how it moves through us and we through it, how deeply the structures of the clock and the calendar press into us.

As I write this I am sitting in the dark of the children’s bedroom….

We Did It! And What Next?

Thank you to all who came to our Devoted and Disgruntled Open Space event at Shakepeare’s Globe. If you want to read some of the reports from the discussions, go here - select the following options: 'By event: D&D Satellite', 'By year: 2018', 'By topic: Parenthood' - reports may take a while to show up! If you'd like to submit a report, go here.

Thanks also to all that came to our commissioned artists’ sharing. It was an exciting and moving day. It felt like just the beginning, both for the individual commissions that each have so much potential, and for MWM’s commissioning role, supporting great and important mother-made work to find its way into the world. In the new year each of the commissioned artworks will be finding a form that can live on our website as a resource and source of inspiration to other mothers and makers, so watch this space.

Two last things…. as we come to the end of this momentous year of MWM-ing, we are going to be sending out some evaluation questions. If you have any feedback you already know you want to give us, about how we could support you better, what’s working and what isn’t, then please do get in touch.

And finally – we have some leftover badges and T-shirts from our Crowd-funding rewards! A creative Christmas present??! Adult T-shirts are going for £10, children’s for £8 and badges are £2. Send funds, an address and a request of T-shirt size via paypal to matilda@motherswhomake.org and Mother Christmas will get out her sleigh/pushchair and do some delivering!

From our friends
We need your love and support to open the first permanent Mother House Studio. Only 5 days until funding deadline!

The Mother House is the world's first affordable artists studio model with integrated childcare, where children are welcome into the work space.

The model is a unique solution to a proven lack of viable provision that sufficiently supports the professional development and wellbeing of artists during early motherhood. Career development, more representation for women in the arts and creative industries, mental health and community are all aspects that this model can improve and foster.

The Mother House crowdfund campaign is part of 'Crowdfund London' funds scheme on Spacehive. The Major of London will pledge up to £50,000 per selected project. The more pledges and page likes The Mother House page has, the more we are likely to be noticed between other 100s of projects.
