Museum of Communication in Bern wins prestigious Council of Europe Museum Prize

The Council of Europe has awarded its Museum Prize 2019 to the Museum of Communication in Bern, Switzerland. The museum reopened at the end of 2017 with a large new permanent display, designed by the Amsterdam design agency Kossmann.dejong exhibition architects.

The jury was very enthusiastic about the ‘open and creative way in which the museum addresses issues related to contemporary communication’. In the new display of the Museum of Communication, visitors are immersed in the fascinating, complex world of communication via interactive, surprising collection pieces. The essence of the new museum concept, which was developed by Kossmann.dejong, is creating a connection between visitors, as a result of which communication can be experienced directly. An important part of this strategy is the use of so-called ‘communicators’: specially trained museum employees who stimulate interaction with and between visitors. The results of this interaction are subsequently collected in various formats, examined by the museum staff and used for future activities or installations.

The European Museum Prize has been awarded annually since 1977 to museums that have undergone modernisation or expansion. When awarding the prize, the European Museum Forum, an organisation of the Council of Europe, looks at the extent to which the museum has succeeded in presenting the collection in an effective and innovative manner.

The Museum Prize is awarded by a jury from the European Museum Forum and forms part of the European Museum of the Year Awards.
