Christmas has passed for 2018 and for many of us, it was a joyous time celebrating the birth of Christ. I trust that you had a wonderful time over the holiday season with family and friends. It will soon be time to take down the lights and tree then decide whether or not you will bother with a New Year’s resolution.
In January, we anticipate many more people will be interested in learning how to play pickleball and will want to enjoy the social aspect of this sport that we all enjoy so much. Feel free to invite family and friends to join us. Our SDBC Pickleball Committee is working on finding more times and venues to play and hopefully, we can accommodate all these new players.
We have attached the new schedule that we implemented in the last two weeks of play in December. The biggest change is that we now start at 5:30PM on Mondays and Wednesdays. The main reason for this change was to eliminate the interruption of South Pointe Academy’s after-school programs. The school rents the gym weekdays until 5PM. We ask that pickleball players do not enter the gym more than 10 minutes before our allotted start times on Mondays and Wednesdays, even if no one is in the gym.
Signup For Play
As our numbers continue to increase, some of our sessions are filling up and unfortunately at those sessions, we have to turn some players away when we meet our maximum. We are looking at ways to alleviate this. In consideration of others, please limit yourself to play only one session per day and do not arrive to sign in more than 30 minutes before the session you wish to play in. After signing in, players are asked to wait outside or in the church foyer until 5 minutes before their session starts. Please enter through the outside doors to limit interference with games in progress. Also, please take the time to re-familiarize yourself with the "General Rules of Play at SDBC," located lower down in the newsletter, in order to make it a positive experience for all who attend.
Charitable Donations for December
Good news! Over the month of December, monies collected for pickleball fees were donated to Delta Assist to support families in Delta. We were able to donate $600 to support families in a variety of programs offered by Delta Assist. In addition, the canned and dry goods collected in lieu of fees have been donated to the SDBC Food Bank. Thank you, everyone, for your donations over and above our regular fees.

General Rules of Play at SDBC
Please sign in for your session but do not arrive to sign in more than 30 minutes before the session you wish to play in begins.
In consideration of others playing at the current session, please do not enter the gym any earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of your session. Please remain outside or in the church foyer.
Only attend a maximum of one playing session per day.
Remember to pay the $2 per player fee at the beginning of your session.
Wear gym shoes to prevent injury from slipping.
Bring your own water bottle.
Please refrain from coaching fellow players unless they have asked for coaching.
When there are 4 or more players waiting, all games end when one of the teams reaches 9 points. No 2 point difference.
After your game, place your paddle in the rack oriented for winner or non-winner. The next four players to go out will be according to the orientation of the closest paddle to the beginning of the rack.
At the end of the final session of the day, please help clean up and put away all the equipment and chairs. The gym must be vacated within 10 minutes of the end of the session, in order for the church to be secured.
Level of Play: Play at the session that is appropriate for your skill level.If you need any assistance determining your skill level, please ask one of the hosts.
Rating Descriptors: Skill level ratings can be broken down into a range between 1.0-5.0. An advanced player is highly skilled and has mastered third shots, dinks, and lobs, and understands body and court position. Find your rating here.

Men's Ministry - Vancouver Giants Hockey Game
Saturday, January 12th, 2019
Come join us for "Saturday Hockey Night in Langley" with the Vancouver Giants who will be playing the Kamloops Blazers. We have 30 seats reserved for this event at the Langley Civic Centre. We will be carpooling from the church parking lot at 5:30PM, heading over to Langley in time for the 7PM game. We should be there in plenty of time to grab something to eat at the concession and watch the pre-game warm up. In order to purchase tickets, please click here. Senior Scene Luncheons
Senior Scene Luncheons are for senior couples, singles, widows, and widowers from within our church, seniors residences, and the community. Come enjoy a home-style lunch, uplifting music, and warm fellowship while learning principles of life from the Bible through various speakers and musicians. Luncheons take place every third Tuesday of each month at 11:30 AM. Suggested donation of $5. Lunch is free if you are a first-time visitor.
