Now accepting memberships for 2019 with CAPO


The Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology (CAPO) is now accepting renewals and new members for 2019! We hope you will be part of the CAPO family in the new year, as it will help us continue our quest to promote capacity for, and excellence in, psychosocial oncology services to enhance the wellness of individuals and families. Details on the types of memberships available, as well as how to activate for 2019, are listed below.


Membership types:

  • Full membership (Regular) is open to individuals with a university degree or registration, certification or other accreditation in a recognized profession who is involved in or interested in psychosocial oncology.
  • Student member is a full time student studying in a discipline related to psychosocial oncology or a member who has returned to study in an academic program, irrespective of the level of education being pursued. 
  • An Affiliate member is a member of the public, an organization, an agency or supplier of goods and services related to psychosocial oncology. 
  • A Retired member is an individual who has been a Full/Regular member in the past and has retired from psychosocial oncology.

Benefits of Membership:

As a membership based organization all of our initiatives to foster and encourage interdisciplinary excellence in psychosocial research, education, and clinical practice in oncology are made possible through membership support. As a member of CAPO/ACOP you also receive the following benefits:

  • In 2019, CAPO will be partnering with IPOS to host the 21st Annual World Congress in Banff, Canada. CAPO members can register at reduced registration fee.
  • Through a partnership between CAPO and Current Oncology, CAPO members receive:
    • Current Oncology will offer a 20% discount on author fees (Article Processing Fee and Extra Page Charges) to CAPO members. Authors are to inform Current Oncology if they are a CAPO member in order to receive discount. CAPO will then confirm membership status.
    • Offer members a complimentary print subscription to the journal.
  • Free subscription to the Canadian interdisciplinary journal, Oncology Exchange.
  • Subscription to Sosido a service for healthcare associations, to speed knowledge transfer, promote collaboration, highlight the important work and research by members, and bridge silos by publicizing the contributions of each specialty group to the broader healthcare community.
  • The opportunity to attend the yearly national conference at a reduced registration fee.
  • The opportunity to participate in the Annual General Meeting.
  • The opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with others working in psychosocial oncology.

    • Log in to the CAPO website
    • Under Renew Now, click on "Manage Account".
    • From there, click on "Renew to 15 Jan 2020." Follow the directions displayed from there.

Cancer and Nutrition Myths

Callie Gross, Registered Dietitian from the Supportive Care Program at the Northeast Cancer Centre

This webinar will address various nutrition myths such as: sugar feeding cancer, alkaline diet, detox diet, ketogenic diet, organic, supplement use, and superfoods. It will provide evidenced based nutrition information and provide resources that are reliable and up-to-date.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Bust nutrition related myths commonly seen in the media
  • Provide evidenced based nutrition information to inform practice with oncology patients
  • Educate professionals to know when to refer to a Registered Dietitian

STUDY NOTICE – Seeking participants for a survey on peer support in cancer 

Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is conducting a study with Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) in Canada with cancer to understand their needs and preferences for peer support and interest in using a digital app to connect with peer cancer survivors. 

If you were diagnosed with cancer between 15 and 39 years of age, please complete the following online 25 minute survey for a chance to win a $100 VISA Gift Card! http://bit.do/Connect4Health

By participating in this study, you will be contributing to the design of a peer support program specifically for AYA diagnosed with cancer.

Interprofessional Psychosocial Oncology: Introduction to Theory and Practice


Psychosocial Oncology is a specialty area focused on the myriad of psychological, emotional, social and spiritual responses of persons affected by cancer. This introductory course will help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to assess individuals and families from a psychosocial and spiritual perspective and develop a collaborative patient/family centered plan of care that is responsive to patient/family needs. Offered in collaboration with the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology. Registration closes January 1, 2019. Course starts January 7, 2019.

Sexual Health in Cancer Part 1 and 2
 
Sexual concerns are one of the most common cancer survivorship issues, yet they are the least likely to be discussed. Learn skills in assessment and counseling for common sexual health issues in cancer care. Offered in collaboration with theCanadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology. Registration for Part 1 closes January 1, 2019. Course starts January 7, 2019.
