New CHASS collaboration will expand student resources for film making

By Hanna Croft
Student Writer, CHASS Marketing & Communications

The department of Media and Cultural Studies (MCS) has partnered with the Theatre, Film and Digital Production (TFDP) department to create a multi-use space for undergraduate and graduate students.

Located in INTS 2117, the room will double as both a laboratory and classroom, providing computers, editing software and other equipment for students while simultaneously allowing instructors to critique, teach and edit alongside students. The room will also have access to the Center for Bibliographic Studies and Research, which focuses on cultural heritage preservation and allows students access to large amounts of digitized texts.

“Students still needed a teaching space and also a film editing bay, both for undergraduates and graduate students who are already working with faculty on film making,” said Milagros Peña, UC Riverside’s Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. “This area is an opportunity for students to develop real skillsets around making film. Hopefully by doubling the classrooms of this sort, we’ll be able to double the amount of courses in these fields that are being offered...and further the potential with digital humanities.”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Luis Sanchez, Philosophy, Fifth-year

"In CHASS, I've met students of different ethnicity and backgrounds. It's really cool to see that because in STEM classes, you're so focused in your labs, you don't have time to communicate with each other. But CHASS is more like you talk with each other, you socialize to learn with each other, to learn from each other. I think that's the greatest advantage in being a CHASS student, because most CHASS professors see the value of discussion over lecture."

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Giving the gift of self-care during the holidays

The holidays can be wonderfully memorable, but they can also be a time of great stress. Final exams, finances, travel and family/social commitments can leave us feeling pulled in many directions.

As a student, please remember that UCR has several on-campus resources to help support you throughout the year.

CHASS F1RST: Designed for first-year CHASS students, CHASS F1RST can increase your chances of academic success through two-unit courses, first-year learning communities, personalized advising and support.

Academic Resource Center: Offers tutoring in a variety of subjects, undergraduate writing support and workshops/seminars that promote student success.

Counseling and Psychological Services: Includes individual and couples counseling, group therapy and psychiatry services. All services are free for UCR students and confidential. Same-day appointments are available in crisis situations, and counselors are available 24-hours by calling 951-UCR-TALK.

R'Pantry: UCR's on-campus food pantry provides emergency food to students in need. Any UCR student can access R'Pantry during walk-in hours or by appointment.

The WELL: Provides health and wellness education and programming, including Wellness Wednesday workshops, health fairs and peer education groups.

I wish you an enjoyable, restful and safe winter break!

— Milagros Peña
