MATCH REPORTS
U10 Girls

Canterbury U10 girls had a variety of teams out this Sunday.

These girls now play well together in any team combination which is great news for the club. They have grasped wide play and the need to attack down the wings.
They can cross the ball and have learnt to pre scan before passing.

The team away at Tunbridge Wells played some fast, exciting and attacking Hockey. They narrowly lost 1-0 to the hosts and then got firmly into their strides with consecutive 5-0 3-0 1-0 victories.

There was a contender for goal of the year, possibly century, that started with a clearance from our goalie to the Canterbury left back, from there it was line ball all the way until picked up by the left wing, deftly crossed into the opposition D to be finished off into the goal by our right wing. Text book attacking play!

Yes it was raining, yes it was cold and generally grotty, but to see the children smile and gel as a team, always makes the trip worth while.
Well done girls, you were all brilliant!

U10 Girls at Polo Farm Triangular
U10 boys Lions Triangular at Holcombe

The Lions had a very successful morning, winning all their matches and only conceding 2 goals, with wins against the 2 Sevenoaks and 2 Holcombe teams. Some lovely attacking hockey, with great use of the wings and good crosses coming in to the top of the D saw goals come from almost everyone in the team.

Goal of the day was from Harry driving up the right of the pitch and crossing into Louis, who only needed one hot to put the ball in back of the net. Reuben made some great saves, and the defence line held strong, making some nice tackles.
Scores: 1-0: 3-2, 4-0; 5-0.

Team: Reuben Jeffery-Fox, Tom Harrop, Piers Lansdell, Hugo Fassum, Louis Bennett, Harry Ledger, Leo Rolison , Nick Grey

U10 Boys Tigers Triangular at Holcombe

The Tigers started well with a nice win over Holcombe Hawks, Edward Goode Pugh getting the winning goal after some nice build up play.

The second match saw the debutants from the U8s Max and Jack scored on their first outing for the U10s, and the final result was 2-2.

The last 2 games against Sevenoaks teams didn’t go our way, however the team played some great hockey, with Cian and Myles defending staunchly and Alfie making some great passes to assist in some of the goals.

Scores: 1-0; 2-2; 0-2; 0-1

Team: Myles Padfield, Aidan Booth, Alfred Holden, Edward Goodenough, Cian Young, Max Grosser, Oscar Parker, Jack Chapman Falconer

U10 boys at the Annual Teddington Tournament

The boys were finally tested today by some quality opposition. The boys knew they had to start with a win. Straight away, we raced into a two goal lead; with some exquisite play, we ended the game 4-0 against Woking. Up next, was a tight game against Guildford, with chances at each end; with time running out, the boys narrowly missed out finishing with a win. 0-0.

Surbiton were next and again the boys played some excellent hockey – moving the ball down the flanks and lots of opportunities to score – four in total. They only conceded one (the only of the day)  in the last few minutes, resulting in a 4-1 win. Last game in our pool, saw the boys determined to break a good and well organised Old Georgian side. Proudly, the boys grabbed a 1-0 victory.

The semi finals were next, against the best team of the day, Teddington. Again with chances from both teams, which could’ve gone either way, the game ended 0-0.  As a result, penalty flicks were next and considering the boys hadn’t practised, they held their nerve but ended up losing to sudden death - unlucky boys!

The 3rd/4th place play-off saw us up against Surbiton again. Despite us feeling a little upset from the semi-final result, the boys were up for the game – finally winning the 1-0.

For me, today was a great learning curve for the boys and us as a team to take into the second half of the season.

The team today were: Ben Hooker, in goal, Joey and Tommy at the back, who were all solid throughout the day; midfield of Freddie, Rhys, Will G and Dominic, who again put in excellent displays of  faultless performances and Will U and Reef up front,  causing the opposition all sorts of problems. Really proud of the boys, well done.

Thank you again to all the parents for their support today and also a big thank you to Alex Hooker for umpiring. 😊

Team and scorers:
Ben Hooker, Joey Burden, Tommy Rogers, Will Gardiner (2), Dominic Curtis (3), Rhys Jones (1), Freddie Post (1), Will Upton (1), Reef Upton (2).

10 goals scored and only 1 conceded

U12 Boys at the Annual Teddington Tournament

Eager to test ourselves against the better sides from London and surrounds we journeyed to Teddington for their annual Christmas tournament with high expectations. Remarkably everyone made it through Chessington and Kingston in good time - only the coach was late - to face Old Cranleighans and Hampstead and Westminster in a mini league for qualification into the later rounds.

Old Cranleighans, actually young chaps from England’s largest village, started with a high tempo game, in fact throughout the day we were a bit sluggish at the off, but we held our shape and soon started to penetrate down the right. Although we had most of the possession we struggled to find the final pass until Nathan placed a meaty drive from the top of the D just inside the right post. The match against H&W followed much the same pattern, Jacob was occasionally required to boot upfield but we were solid in defence with our most cohesive play coming down the right wing. Again we couldn’t convert our possession into prizes requiring Nathan to repeat the “top of the D strike just inside the right post” trick to prevail worthy winners.

Relieved to have made the quarters - its a long way to come for a couple of 12 minute games -  next up was Surbiton, a slightly motley crew on account of their being the “away” team who without bibs wore an array of Parkas, Duffle-coats and Donkey jackets. By now we were in a grove - slow start, strong in defence, nice passing in transition, occasional encouragement (shouting) from Jacob, midfield winning ever more 50:50s as the game went on, nice pace and skill in attack, very few short corner decisions going our way etc - that resulted in a scrambled goal which might have been two following the grant of a stroke in the final minute. Not to worry, another deserving 1-0 result and onwards to the semis and a date with Wimbledon.

I suspect most neutrals would have seen this as the real final involving the tournament’s two strongest teams. We were well matched but Wimbledon approached the game with greater energy, pace, and commitment all of which we possess but couldn’t find consistently during the first few minutes of an absorbing game. Their high line and pressing style meant we found it difficult to settle into our stride and eventually the pressure on our defence told with Wimbledon scoring a couple of goals despite a series of epic, quick fire saves from Jacob “the Cat” which had the crowd purring in admiration. Our boys dug deep and gradually started to retain a bit more possession and self-belief which saw them join the battle. Perhaps over a 20 minute game we might have drawn level but as it was Rhys’s blast into the roof of the net came on the final whistle. A fair result (2-1) and one that we must learn from if we want to progress deep into the end of season representative tournaments.

Our final game for 3rd place was against Old Georgians. We went with a more experimental formation but otherwise your correspondent is unable to recall the finer details of a match we seemed to edge without there being much goal-mouth drama. Not to say that our massed supporters were bored, the match was decided by penalty flicks - cool hands Rhys, Robin and Oliver converting expertly whilst Jacob produced a Pat Jennings-esque save low to his right to give us the game and the consolation of a medal (actually we are told the medals are in the post!).

As ever a huge thank you to our family and friends for their support and chauffeuring.

Team;  Jacob Beer, Oliver Curtis, Thomas Hutchins, Freddie McMullen, Rhys Harmer, Robin Cox, Thomas Tan, Ben Spackman, Nathan Sumner and Kyle Gurubathan.

U12 Boys jaguars -  Triangular at Tunbridge Wells

In spite of fielding two teams at Polo Farm and one team at Teddington, it was a strong Jaguars team that had the pleasure of a 9:00am meet in Tunbridge Wells on Sunday.  The Jaguars were down to play two teams from TW and two teams from Holcombe.  The first game against Tunbridge Wells 2s was a very one sided affair, with the boys running out 4-0 winners thanks to three good team efforts from Sam Schuuring, Harry Bremner and Ned Bourner, as well as one excellent individual goal from Sam Benson.

The next two matches were against the two Holcombe teams.  Unfortunately although we had ~90% of the possession and chances, we couldn’t find a way to score.  The Holcombe goalkeepers repelled everything that was on target, with numerous other efforts just missing the target, much to the anguish of the Canterbury supporters.  The boys were clearly disappointed with not being able to get the results their efforts deserved in these matches.  However much to their credit, they picked themselves up for the final match and produced an excellent 3-1 win against a good Tunbridge Wells first team.  A well-deserved goal from the excellent Alfie Culver (thanks in a large part to the persistence of Sam S) was quickly followed by a second goal from Sam B and a very nice flicked finish from Jack Parker.  Tunbridge Wells however came back very strongly and it needed some excellent rear-guard defence from Ollie McMullan and our keeper Daniel Luckhurst (who made three 1 on 1 saves) to stop the opposition getting back into the game.

Many thanks to all the parents who turned up on a damp morning, and for the encouragement given to the boys throughout the matches.  It was another very enjoyable day out, showcasing the superb strength in depth that we currently have at the club.

U14 Girls vs Sevenoaks

A slightly depleted squad of 12 girls travelled to Sevenoaks hoping to preserve an unbeaten record before the start of the Christmas break.

Canterbury started brightly with Sophie Wain making some commanding runs forward and supported well by good wing play from Abbie Pritchard and Jess McCully. Irmak Kara was her usual “terrier” like self in midfield always helping to move play forwards and unsettle the opposition. Canterbury pressed forward and Sophie narrowly missed an opportunity at the left post. Sevenoaks countered and a short corner was expertly saved by Georgia Binfield. The play then switched to the other end of the pitch and just as the sun finally broke through the clouds overhead Canterbury were awarded their own short corner.  A firmly struck shot by Sophie beat the keeper: 1-0 to Canterbury.

Olivia Brooks-Merino made a couple of strong breakaway runs and was unlucky to have a crisply struck shot saved by the Oaks’ keeper. Not to be outdone, at the other end Georgia was called upon to race off her line and smother a counter-attack. Just before half-time, Olivia had another excellent effort saved on the line. In truth, as the girls gathered for their team talk from Fabrizio the score line did not do full justice to the amount of possession that Canterbury had enjoyed prior to the break.

Soon after the commencement of the second half, Canterbury again pressed forward and Olivia was able to net Canterbury’s second. An injury to Sophie meant some reorganisation of the team, that required moving Annabelle Styles out of defence and on to the left wing.

In truth, Sevenoaks emerged after the break a changed side. They showed far greater determination and pushed Canterbury hard. Their efforts were rewarded with a break away goal that split open the Canterbury defence. Thereafter, as the skies darkened again, Canterbury were forced to play more on the back foot. Impassioned pleas from Fabrizio for the girls to play simple passes were not always heeded, but heads never went down. Throughout the game there was some very resolute defending shown by Rebecca Carter and Annie Verrier, assisted by Sophie Aikin, Molly-Anne Burden and Kiera Beerstecher. Sevenoaks continued to press for the equaliser but without success.

This was very much a tale of two halves, but fortunately the girls clung on and showed great determination to grind out a 2-1 victory.

Irmak was deservedly voted player of the match by the Sevenoaks side and coach Fabrizio's player of the match was Annie Verrier.

U16 Girls vs Ashford

Canterbury travelled with only 10 players and after a slow start needed some good saves to keep Ashford out from a couple of PCs. Canterbury took the lead after Flora S released Lily Beer who raced through and calmly put the ball past the keeper. Ashford then sprung the defence and equalised after a breakaway. Canterbury retook the lead after Jess McMeeking's strong run down the left was topped off with an equally good finish. We continued to struggle with Ashford breaking way at speed and following another break, Ashford scored from a PC despite a despairing dive from Keira.

Alex Ferguson made it 3-3 with another strong run and dribble down the right, but unfortunately a strong break and score from Ashford followed shortly after. The final score was 4-3 to Ashford. Goals: Lily x1, Jess x1 and Alex x1

Many thanks to Lily Beer from the U14s for helping us out and running strongly throughout the game.

Player of the Match: Keira Papper

U16 Girls Indoor vs Sevenoaks - Kent Round

After leading for most of the match it was a shame to lose out in the end to a good Sevenoaks side. The girls performed well and in particular Ashleigh in goal. Couldn't have asked for anymore in terms of workrate and intensity. Well done to all involved. Look forward to seeing what this side can do at the Copper Box tournament.

Result; 7-3 Loss. Goals: Alex x1, Issie x2
