TOO FAST!

TOO FAST!

Here we are, sitting on a planet spinning at a 1,000 mph, moving 66,000 mph around a star which travels 483,000 mph around a galaxy center that itself hurtles off into space at about 1.3 million mph headed for a collision with the Andromeda Galaxy. Moreover, we humans exist in a tiny perceptual bubble, aware of less than .001% of all the information that surrounds us. Our five limited senses reduce all that data to the bare minimum.  We can hardly hear anything, our sense of smell is embarrassingly limited, and we see only a tiny spectrum of light. Who knows what else is going on out there of which we are completely ignorant?

Yet we talk, laugh, sing, dance, tell stories, love, and create art.

Not bad, not bad at all.

Those are all good things to do as we in the Northern Hemisphere endure the long nights heading toward the Solstice in a couple of weeks, followed by the holidays.

From all of us at APG we wish everyone a Happy Solstice and Happy Holidays. We hope you talk, sing, dance, tell stories, laugh, and love this month and every month. This life we have is precious.

Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again.

Free Shipping until December 20th

It is not too late to take advantage of our free shipping offer. That runs through December 20th. We'll ship anywhere in the continental United States for free. The only small print? The free shipping may not be combined with any discounts.

Gift Certificates

Something even more fun than selecting a photograph for a friend or loved one is to bring them in to select their own photograph. That's why we also have gift certificates.

Workshops, Tours, and Personal Tutoring

In January, we'll announce our schedule for workshops, tours, and presentations at the gallery. If you are in need of a last minute Christmas present for someone, we have gift certificates which can be used for any of those or for photographs.

Karl Koenig News

Specials on Karl's Famous Art Work.

We are happy to announce that our relationship with Karl Koenig's family continues. Karl was a world class artist well deserving of his international fame and we are proud to represent his work. While he was alive he and his family split their time between their home in Albuquerque and their ranch in northern New Mexico where Karl made many of his famous photographs. The family recently sold the ranch and, in the process, discovered another cache of pristine work by Karl.

We plan to have another show of Karl's work in the gallery but are not waiting until we can do that to let everyone know about this discovery.

After selecting the prints they wished to keep, the family members decided that it was most important to them that the remainder of Karl’s work find homes with people who truly love and appreciate his prints.  In their view, the best way to do this is to return prices to their 2012 level, the year in which Karl died.

In accordance with their generous wishes, we have repriced his work.  Now is the time to own the print you’ve coveted and the best opportunity to own a limited edition print by this internationally-renowned artist

Shopping in Albuquerque

Albuquerque's Mayor wants us all to buy something in Albuquerque this holiday season. We'e on board with that! The City, the Mayor says, wants “. . . to encourage everyone in Albuquerque to shop locally during the holiday season to uplift local businesses, and raise awareness about the impact shopping small has on a local economy. Through the end of December, I am asking New Mexicans to spend $35 in two different Mainstreet or locally owned stores or restaurants. Albuquerque’s Mainstreet runs up Central from Old Town up to Nob Hill, and this year marks the 35th anniversary of the New Mexico Mainstreet program. This is the heart of our city—but we want everyone to shop all over town. All across the city, small businesses will displaying their One Albuquerque Buy Local stickers and posters, asking people in their local communities to spend just $35 in two locally owned businesses in their area.”

Only $35? We suggest more, a lot more. Say $90 million. (See below.)

Psst. Here's the block where we suggest that the best way to support the arts is to buy some.

It is part of the photographer’s job to see more intensely than most people do.

Items of Interest

Shades of Gray

The annual “Shades of Gray” photography show continues. This is the show run by Leroy Perea and his staff that is limited to black and white work. The show is in the Fine Arts building at NM Expo, better known as the State Fair Grounds in Albuquerque.  The show runs Dec 2-27th. The gallery hours are 10am - 5pm except for Christmas Eve and Christmas day when the show will be closed. Several people who have seen it report that it is excellent. (And that is not just from people who have work in the show!)

Geotagging

After our lead article last month about Geotagging, the New York Times followed our lead. (It often does: We are newsmakers here.) Reader Norm Gagne sent us this link to the Times's article.

How to Learn Photography from a $90 Million Dollar Painting

Here is an article for our photographer friends on what can be learned about the craft of photography from David Hockney's 1972 painting that just sold for $90 million dollars. (The staff and management of the Newsletter would like to mention that anyone who has an extra $90 million lying around and wants to purchase a fine work of art should contact the Newsletter staff directly.)

10 Trillion Frames a Second

While we are talking about big numbers here, let us not fail to mention this new camera that can capture 10 trillion frames a second. (This is for you Leroy.)

Just think, as soon as our smartphones can do that, social media users can post several trillion photos of their food instead of just one or two.

You mustn’t think that everything can be said in language.
