Reflecting on 2018
We are really looking forward to 2019, and celebrating 20 years of serving the youth of South Philadelphia. But before that, let us take a look back at 2018, a great year for us at Sunrise of Philadelphia!
The Philadelphia Out of School Time Literacy Initiative identified the work of Sunrise as having a significant impact on our students' reading levels. For our students at Key and Southwark School, none were reading at or above grade level when starting the 2017-2018 school year. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff, by the end of the school year over 50% of our Southwark students were reading at or above grade level and every student at Key increased by more than one whole grade reading level.
Sunrise in the News
We were honored to be included among 38 fantastic non-profit organizations in Philadelphia at Generocity for Giving Tuesday. We had 12 Days of Giving leading up to Giving Tuesday, because we wanted to get the word out about some of the wonderful things we are able to do through generous support from all of you. Some great organizations, Fleisher Art Memorial and Coded by Kids, that we partner with were mentioned as well.
Every First Thursday of the Month, Fleisher Art Memorial and Sunrise of Philadelphia has Family Engagement Nights for 'Our Stories' - made possible by a grant from the William Penn Foundation. Our event celebrating Dia de los Muertos, was featured in an article by Grace Maiorano at the South Philly Review.
On Thursday December 6, 2018, Inquirer Columnist Helen Ubiñas joined us at Southwark School, along with  our friends at Puentes de Salud, with her 'Pop-Up Newsroom.' The youth made their own front page news stories and learned how to take photographs with photojournalist Ada Trillo.
There were many ways students across sites told their own stories this year. Sunrise Youth at SouthwarkEdwin M. Stanton, and Chester A. Arthur Schools interviewed educators and community members for Lights on Afterschool, Thursday, October 25, 2018. At Sunrise, we try, as much as we can, to facilitate opportunities for our youth and community to authentically tell their own stories.
