International Services Centre is closed during the winter break!

All University of Alberta offices, including the International Services Centre, are closed December 25, 2018, to January 1, 2019.

The International Services Centre will reopen January 2, 2019, at 8:30 am.

During the winter break, if you require emergency assistance call 911. Contact UAlberta Protective Services for non-urgent concerns on campus. They are available 24 hours, seven days a week. For off-campus non-urgent concerns contact the Edmonton Police Service 

If you experience distress and need someone to talk to, call the Edmonton Distress Line, 780-482-3456.

English Conversation Club tomorrow: cultural perspectives on risk and reward


Join the English Conversation Club this Friday, December 14, for an interesting conversation about the cultural perspectives on risk and reward.

We will discuss the definition of risk and what it looks like in different cultural perspectives and countries, and play a risk/reward themed 'Would you rather?' game. 

The ECC is a great way to engage in a fun and interactive session while improving your English speaking skills. No registration is required, drop-ins are always welcome!

Service Canada to visit UAlberta to set up your SIN card

Do you need a SIN card? Or do you need to renew your SIN card? Service Canada will open a one-day SIN clinic at the University of Alberta in the New Year, Friday, January 11. This is your chance to get help and information on accessing the programs and services of the Government of Canada.

Before you visit the SIN clinic make sure to bring: 

  • A primary proof-of-identification document (bring a secondary document just in case). Please note: copies are not accepted.
  • For temporary residents: Bring your passport, a valid study or work permit indicating you "May accept employment" or "May work"
Please note: Service at the SIN clinic is based on a first-come-first-served basis.

Next I-Work! session: Canadian Workplace Pragmatics: Keeping a Job


Join us for a highly interactive session on keeping a job once you are hired. The next I-Work! will help you understand the cultural patterns of the workplace. 

This session is perfect for students who are starting their career development or a new position. It covers communication pragmatics including making a request or an apology, cultural ideas surrounding conflict and conflict resolution, and roles and expectations.

Free Workshops to Manage Stress! 


Counselling & Clinical Services offers free, drop-in workshops for UAlberta students to learn real-world strategies to deal with common mental health issues, such as stress. Their workshops allow students to learn more about a mental health topic while interacting with a psychologist (or intern) and peers.

The workshop, The Student Life: Managing Stress, is January 29. It focuses on learning how to make small changes in your mindset to lead to big impacts on your grades, motivation, and stress.

Ice Skating is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with your friends this winter season! Don't have skates? Not a problem! Skate rentals are available at William Hawrelak Park Pavilion for use in the park.

Enjoy thousands of bright lights and daily musical performances at the beautiful Legislature Grounds! This year, to help usher in the spirit of the season, more than 40 groups perform from the grand staircase throughout December.

Celebrate New Year's Eve Downtown! 


Ring in the New Year with fun entertainment and fireworks in the heart of downtown.

Start your evening off inside the Federal Building, where there will be live music, games, light installations and more!

Then bring the party outside for ice carving, bannock making, fire pits and the highlight of the evening, a spectacular fireworks show.
