Bishop search update:
Application period closes, deliberation begins

The Bishop Search Committee reports that the nomination and application period is now closed at the diocesan profile website, which is still available to view here.
"We are delighted to have received such a healthy response from a broad group of individuals called by God to discern a call with us," the committee states. "Now, the next phase of hard work begins. We met last Saturday to start the process of prayerful deliberation, with video interviews to commence during Advent. Please keep us in your prayers; between now and then, we will keep you posted."

A slate of candidates is expected to be announced in March of 2019. Visit the Bishop Search page for updates. Sanctuary Seekers Need Help

Every day the news is filled with stories of the situation at our southern border. Asylum seekers fleeing violence and people seeking economic opportunities to provide for their families cannot cross over to the United States. At the border crossing by Tijuana, the wait for an interview with immigration services was as high as 45 days before the caravans arrived. If those in the caravans apply for asylum, the wait will be many months. While they wait, these desperate people need shelter; but for many, the only alternatives are camps set up by the Mexican government with little food and inadequate sanitation. Diseases are spreading.

The US government needs to allocate resources to assess the cases of asylum seekers at the border in a timely fashion.  If you agree, contact your representatives. The Diocese of Los Angeles has prepared talking points for “Take Action Tuesdays” on the LA Sacred Resistance Facebook page.

In San Diego there is an immediate need as people are released from detention. An ecumenical group of faith organizations are there providing short-term shelter and food as well as transportation expenses to join family members and sponsors in other parts of the country, but they are being overwhelmed by the need. In recent weeks, the number of asylum seekers being released in San Diego is from 50 to 70 per day. You can help by donating to organizations on the front lines:

Share the Journey, run by Catholic Charities;

Migrant Relief, run by Jewish Family Service of San Diego;

Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in San Diego;

Al Otro Lado, directly serving indigent deportees, migrants, and refugees in Tijuana and Los Angeles.

Thank you for your consideration and support! Next week's issue will focus on advocacy for immigration reform.

2019 UTO Grant applications now being accepted

Known worldwide as UTO, the United Thank Offering grants are awarded for projects that address a new focus area each year, both domestically and internationally in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. (Gathering and coffee at 9:45).

It’s particularly valuable to those who are discerning a call to the diaconate or priesthood along with their spouses, as well as those in the congregation that “walk alongside” these people (vestry members and clergy) as they respond to their calls. The agenda includes a discussion about the process of discernment and an overview of ECR’s ordination process. To register, please email Dottie Fuller at dotfuller@aol.com with your name and congregation by end-of-day January 23, 2019. (Please state "COM Registration" in the subject line.)
