Winter Programs and Books!
It doesn't snow here in the Bay Area, but I think we can still indulge in the magic of snowflakes, winter wonderlands, and books that take place in a snowy landscape.
The Winter Wonderland program will be next Wednesday, December 19. It'll be a chance to make snowflakes either to take home or use to further decorate the Library. We'll also have cookies, oranges, and other holiday treats. I'm going to make some of my favorite cookies, so feel free to bring some of your own to share.
The Friends of the Library Bookstore will be open during the Winter Wonderland program. It's a wonderland of its own, filled with fantastic books for all ages.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or thoughts. I look forward to seeing everyone soon.
Best,
Erin

I miss snow: pulling on snowsuits and playing outside all afternoon, pink cheeks and cold fingers, and then getting warm again when you're finally back inside. (The photo on the right is my brother, my mother and me, and the 'snow woman' we made, circa 1983.)
Part of winter is the extreme beauty of a snowy landscape: trees hung with icicles, the dazzling winter-blue sky, or the night brightened by the moon reflected by the snow.

The books on these lists evoke the wonder, beauty, danger, and transformation of winter.
Among the J Fiction, I especially like Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy, which is a retelling of the Snow Queen set in a museum with magical realism. It is just creepy and frightening enough to elicit real relief when everything works out fine (which of course it does).
Among the picture books, Owl Moon is one of the loveliest picture books I've ever read, Snow by Sam Usher bring readers the excitement of fresh snow, and The Snowy Day is one of the classics of children's literature.
The folk and fairy tales include several versions of the Snow Queen and The Mitten, but also a much less well-known Iroquois tale, The Rabbit's Snow Dance.
