A Year in Review

Hey Babe,

Can you believe 2018 is almost over? What a year it's been. I'll be the first one to admit there were a lot of downs. We were gut-wrenched watching Dr. Christine Blasey Ford speak her truth in front of Congress — and the rest of the world. We received a huge wakeup call about mental health and addiction as a handful of celebrities overdosed or committed suicide. We feel like a broken record whenever we hear about the newest addition to the recent string of mass shootings. Thoughts and prayers? No, policy and action.

But for all the darkness, there were beams of light.

Earlier this year, I told you that my word of the year was "Oprah." I wanted to channel the way that she has OWNED her place in the world and her work. I loved her speech at the Golden Globes, but it was this one part that stopped me in my tracks: "A new day is on the horizon." Look, we have a long, long way to go, but we're starting to see some change. We're working together to pave the path for new ways of seeing power and success.

We've seen Hollywood's biggest stars stick up for themselves and their sisters with #MeToo and Time's Up. We saw a beautiful display of diversity and girl power as Meghan Markle married Prince Harry. We found the ultimate anthem in "Thank U, Next." We've seen women from all walks of life be elected for office.

We've seen BIG things happen in this community, too. There's Natalie, who has brought together 100 Badass Babes in Chicago. There's Hannah, who debuted her first novel at 25 years old — and already has two more books coming down the pipeline. One of my favorite "pinch me" moments was interviewing women and men on the #MeToo aftermath for Good Morning America. (What was your 2018 Big Life moment? Share it with the sisters here!)

Many people say 2018 was "the year of the woman," and I truly believe it's rockstar game-changers like you and sisterhoods like the Badass Babes community who have made that happen. I love watching you ladies connect and open up with each other. You lift your squad up during good times and bad. And we need our sisters now more than ever as we gear up for another big year ahead.

Thank you for creating such an open, honest, and badass community. If you have any sisters who have yet to join the community, invite them to subscribe and join the Badass Babes page.

What's in store for 2019? How can we make this community bigger, better, and more badass? I'd love your help. Tell me what you want out of our community in this poll.

Happy holidays, sisters — the best is yet to come!

BTW: This newsletter started from a series of conversations at my dinner table (dinner may be overselling...it was fancy frozen pizza and many bottles of rosé). Each dinner was a group of about 6 or so, friends of a friend of a friend, who came together to trade notes, offer support and share insider secrets. I called them the Badass Babes because they were the kind of girls anyone would want to be—confident, rule breaking, game changing. The conversations were so revelatory that I wanted to broaden the sisterhood and connect with young women everywhere. And so here we are. So glad you could join us!
Thank you for being a part of the Badass Babes.
